I'm looking to buy my very first Maxima... as inexpensively as possible. I've come across a 1996 5-speed with 136k miles with a few basic upgrades (wheels, tires, clutch). The problem is that the owner says it has a "leaky drive axle" that is leaking transmission fluid. How serious of an issue is this? Perhaps a gasket or seal issue? Or does it mean the tranny is on its way out or something along those lines?

Def have the car looked at by a mechanic before you buy it.
The only worry I would have is that it sounds like something similar to what I am dealing with on my 95 SE with around the same number of miles.
My problem (an annoying transmision fluid leak) requires a transmision overhaul, which the dealer is asking around $1,400 for.

 

Hmm. In my shopping research for a 4th gen/I-30 I've found that the 95-96(+?) Maxima and I-30 5 speeds have the wrong size shims in the transmission bearings where the drive axel is and over time this causes bearings to get damaged, causing issues and leading to leaks. Its an expensive fix because it requires a tranny rebuild with the proper sized bearings/shims. If it is not fixed properly the same thing will happen again and again. If you plan on buying this car, keep in mind you will likely need to throw $1200+ at this car rather immediately.

 

I think my first Maxima should not have such a pressing problem... I'll wait on it. :-)

Stay away from that car. Yes it may "just" be a seal, but you don't really know. It could be the start of bad bearings and that will cost you over a grand easy. Is there a high pitched wine trough out the gears? Has the drive axel seal been replaced before? Is there excessive play in the drive-shaft? Look into these things before you make any decision.
Trust me, this is not something you want to deal with, my car is in the shop right now because of bad bearings.

 

Yeah, I'd stay away from that one. I wouldn't let it discourage you for future 95-96 5-spd considerations, not every such maxima has the wrong shims...
