Air/Fuel guage gone crazy....

hey i installed this air/fuel guage and this thing is seriously insane. I heard its supposed to move with air/fuel increase but why does this thing move back and forth very very very very fast as i drive. even on the highway i got this stupid light which keeps moving back and forth from Completely Lean to Barly Rich. And it keeps moving again, and again even when the throttle is held stedy.

I heard it may do this but seroulsy how can anyone even stand to watch this thing go spastic all the time. Its almost like a damn strobe light at night. Whats the point of this crap.

Your gauge is probubly short circuiting. My damn EGT gauge goes crazy about half the time, with the needle flickering from 200F to 1800F, back and forth. Check the wiring.

You're kidding, right?
That's how it works... The car is in Closed Loop readjusting A/F mixture constantly.
If it DOESN'T sweep back and forth on the highway, that's an indication your O2 sensor is tired and needs to be replaced.

come again.. Here the specs. I have 3 New O2 sensors. AND I hard wire-spliceded this into the computers ECU. so its a solid connect. All my connections are good for sure esp. to the ecu.

I guess it makes sense b/c its monitoring the air/fuel in a fast constant loop program. updating. updating.and annoying as alls hells

I once rode in a 300ZX Turbo that had one of those guages. The movements were definitely a lot slower than what you describe on your car and the guage movements coincided with the throttle movements. When the car was idling, it was a bit lean. As it got off the line at a medium pace, it would give a solid reading in the stoichiometric zone. On hard acceleration, it would read solidly towards the rich side.

But yes, technically the O2 sensor voltage constantly sweeps back and forth. Perhaps the guage should have a relatively fast filtering device on the electrical input to give you more of a rolling average on the guage reading. Perhaps its a defective guage???

P.S. The web developers get more creative with the smilies day by day. The one in "Chungers" is the best I've seen so far.

I had an Autometer A/F gauge... it sweeps back and forth during normal driving unless your >40% throttle then it goes "rich" but when you're cruising it sweeps back and forth (faster = healthier O2 sensor)...

Bottom line: It's working the way it's supposed to. And yes, it can be annoying.

Chris, that smilie ;rofl; has been around quite awhile... used alot by moderators especially.
