Please Help Metal on Metal sound in wheel well

Hey guys,

When it rains it pours. I have noticed metal on metal or squeeky grinding noise during hard cornering in my driverside wheel well. It used to be when I turned right but now if I turn left it does it too. It comes up even during normal cornering as long as it is a 90 degree turn. It sounds almost like my struts and springs are rubbing or my ss lines are rubbing my rims. I don't know I can figure it out. Any ideas before I take it to the shop? I recently had bearings and cv joint replaced on that same side a year ago. As I recall, when those go bad it is a squeeling noise. Sorry for the long post. I am getting my Fidanza flywheel and Exedy clutch installed this weekend, so i just wished my car was perfect.

Check your brakes and the brake dust shield.

This sounds like classic strut mounts gone bad. The strut mount contains bearings that allow the strut to rotate a bit, and provides another means of shock absorption. The bearings eventually wear down, dry out (lose their lubrication) etc. The result is a grinding or clucking noise when you turn. The good news is that a strut mount costs about $40. The bad news is that you have to take the struts off to replace them.

Mine was sounding just as you described yours. I replaced em', and it is now noiseless (and rides a bit better as well.)

Use the search function to search for "strut mounts" or "shock tower mounts" and you'll find 100 descriptions of MAX's sounding just like yours!

Hope it helps!

I originally thought it might be my struts, sounds like the springs were rubbing them. I ordered the rear AGX's already. Sounds like I have to order the front ones. That sucks because I ordered from tire rack... now I have to order from them again but pay more than if I ordered from cattman...
O well

No, no. Your struts and/or springs may be just fine, and you'll get that noise if the mounts are bad. The mounts are just two inch tall rubber-and-bearing things that the tops of the struts seat into. I'm suggesting that the mounts are bad; you're struts might not need replaced at all.

Gotcha, Sorry I should read the post and not skim. Should I get KYB ones or does pepboys and advance auto parts sell quality ones? Any specific mounts I should look for?

OEM mounts are fine (and inexpensive). You can get aftermarket ones, from companies like Motovational, but they don't make that much difference from what I've been told, and cost twice as much.

You might want to recheck your bearings again. They might have not done it right the first time.. what your describing sounds a lot like a wheel bearing problem. When you first did your wheel bearings how bad was the sounds. And did they just replace your wheel bear or did they do the bearing and the wheel hub?.. If you were driving a good while the first time before you fixed the bearing you might have put a groove in the hub.....Anyways just double check to be on the safe side.

p.s. one more thing.

A quick way to check if its the bearing.. Jack your car up on that side its making the noise from. Try to move your wheel for the top and the bottom side.. it shouldn't have any play when doing so.. Or you can remove your wheel and check and see how tight your cv axel bolt is on..
Sometimes the vibration will cause it will loosen, so see if its tight.

It can be a numerous number of things that is causing that.. but those are a few things to look for..

Good luck

I think my strut mounts are gone because I have the same noise and my axles have been replaced just 6 months ago. I also get vibrations above 60mph after several attempts to rebalance my new tires. Also my ride is bumpy, could these be the symptons of bad strut mounts?

have you guys ever done a alinment after putting on the aftermarket struts and springs? That can cause it to vibrate as certain speeds also.
