RAIN SUCKS....crashed the Max.

So I just got done spending a week at the Outer Banks, NC with the family Sunday. I had my car packed for school because I go to school in GA and my parents live in NJ. So it should take about 5 hrs or so to get there. How long does it take me??? 11 hrs!! Why??? cause i crashed my car.

Driving down I-95 and there was ALOT of rain. People were going 45 in a 70mph. I can't see five feet in front of my bumper so I decide to get off the highway and go get something to eat to see if the rain would die down while I was taking a break from driving. I was pretty tired too.

So anyway going about 25mph I hydroplane sideways into a metal spike that had a reflector on it to mark the offramp. My rear drivers side door is messed up along with the molding on the bottom. The window and the door both work fine its just it doesn't look too good.

I don't know if the door can be banged out or what but I think the molding definitely needs to be replaced. The good part is that the molding seems to be messed up only after the crease in it(if you know what I am talking about). I am not going to tell insurance about the crash so I need to find a cheap fix solution cause money is not something I have right now. I have some in the bank but I want to keep it there in case something happens to the Max that I HAVE to replace to drive the car. So right now the plan is to get a job and find a way to fix it.

If anyone has suggestions they are definitely welcome. I was thinking I might be able to fix the door myself if I could find a door at a junkyard....but I don't really know whats going on....

That sucks man.. At least the damage wasn't too bad. As for suggestions: how about a better set of tires? I have driven the max is some really bad thunderstorms and never come close to hydroplaning even at twice your speed or more.

Hmm, well i dont think any set of tires will keep you from hydroplaning if the rainstorm is bad enough. I mean, we've been geting some flooding here recently and the roads are still puddled and soaked as i speak, when it rains, so many big puddles form, no set of tires will resist a couple inches of rain now...

BTW, im running on Yokohama AVS ES100, which are pretty damn good in the rain, and even ive hydroplaned, granted it was for a split second, but thats all it takes...

Good luck on the max man, that sucks, least you werent hurt or anything, trust me, coulda been a whole helluva lot worse...

At 25mph though???? His tires must be really bad to have spun at that speed.

I was driving the opposite direction the same weekend and hydroplaned a couple times... the key is to slow well before you hit the water, not during or after, and to maintain speed when u hit, not decreasing or increasing exept for maybe getting off the throttle. I was headed up to Jersey when THE MOST Horrible rain hit.... so I understand.... My condolences.

Seems odd, my tires are running almost bald on the corners and need some serious replacing, and I was in some of the worst rain I've ever driven in going through upstate NY this weekend.

I was doing anywhere from 40-50mph and hydroplaned maybe once or twice for less than a second at a time.

I'd suspect you drove over a little more than a puddle.

good luck.

Got an estimate today. I need a new door, molding can be pounded out and the crap needs to be repainted/clearcoat. Try to estimate how much it is.....

Got a general number in your head?

I bet you didnt guess $2077.38 WHAT A LOAD OF DONKEY ****...i was so mad. I mean if it was $2070 I might have made do and bit the bullet but this is WAY TOO MUCH!!!

You should see the damage...wish i had a camera...doesnt look that bad at all.

Anyways after almost in front of the guy he gave me his friends number that does work on the side. I am hoping that I can just have him pound out the molding and paint it and I could find a door from someone on here or at a junkyard....so if you got a sterling mist door for a '98 LET ME KNOW....
