Strange noise from top of engine

I have got a huge problem right now! My car is making a weird clicking noise, and for you musicians, it's in triplets (click-click-click). I start the car, it idles at 200 for a bit, then dies. I've pinpointed where the sound is coming from. If you are at the front of the car and looking down at the engine, it's coming from the top right, by the top right spark plug (intake side). If the car is on, but not started, it makes the clicking noise in that area. It's either the sparkplug, or that valve right next to that plug (has like 2 hoses coming off of it). Anyone ever have this problem? Need advice ASAP...Chicago Air and Water show is tomorrow and I needs to fix this. Thanks!!

I think it's your IACV - Idle air control valve.

fuel injectors make a ticking noise, maybe its them

but ur idle is way to low, maybe clogged injector, dirty feul filter, dirty air filter, dirty trottle body, dirty IACV

I know it sounds dumb, but we have seen and heard this same thing... IAC. Make sure your Idle Air Adjustment Screw is set correctly. For information on that, consult your Haynes manual.

Locate the IAC when you hear the ticking. Put your hand on it (assuming that it isn't too hot since it doesn't run more than a few seconds) and verify that you feel something happening that corresponds to the ticking.

Also, it may be a good idea to disconnect and reconnect the harnesses that are located in that vicinity.

If you don't have a Haynes manual I would suggest that you get one. It has the steps to set to Idle Air screw correctly. I am guessing you will benefit from this.

If you can't get one, let me know and I'll try to cough up the directions later.

Check out this link:

It will tell you how to get the IAC off. I would also suggest cleaning it if you are going to take it off.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
D

ok, took off the IACV, cleaned it out...ton of carbon buildup. Car is still not working and I still get that ticking sound. If I put my hand on the IACV harness, I can feel it clicking. Any other ideas?

If my IACV is bad, how much does one of those cost, and where can I find it other than a dealer?

This car is just a multitude of problems. Ok, I cleaned out the IAC valve and reinstalled it. The car actually started, idled at about 1200, then dropped to abou 850. I put the car in drive, then it died. So I've figured that either my car is getting too much/too little fuel, or too little/too much air. Any help guys?
