problem with car consuming gas

just bought my new maxima two days ago and the car seems to be consuming alot of gas when you step on the gas pedal. What can be the possible cause of that. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Uhhh..You step on the gas pedal, your car eats gas to make it move....Simple... Now if it is excessive that is another story. check you fuel filter.

there's obviously something wrong with your car if its consuming gas...
here are the solutions:

1) leave the car on your driveway 24/7

2) return the car to the dealership

im afraid there is no way to fix this problem...sorry bro

Fill up the tank and go for a drive and see what MPG you get.

It could be a bad knock sensor, fuel filter, O2 sensors, dirty throttle body and/or IACV, or your tire pressures are way off (mines are at 32 all around).

Do a full tune up. Change the plugs to NGK, new air filter, new fuel filter, and new PCV valve. While you're at it, do an oil change

I get 17-18 MPG mostly city and I just got about 22-23 MPG mostly highway (when I went to a Wisconsin meet).

i mean you literally see the cars fuel guage pin go down when you step on the gas. The only time it doesn't go down that fast iw when you drive like an old lady. i just got the car and so what are the first things that i need to change in the engine. like someone says the plugs but i don't think that would do a whole lot cause right now the car idles great and doesn't seem to have any power loss.

take it back to the dealer you bought it from, you are covered under the lemon law unless u got over 100K miles on it. should be getting atleast 300 miles per tank, specially if its a stock max.

When I step on it in my car my needle dips too, it goes back up however in the next few ninutes. I guess it's because of the acceleration the gas in the tank gets pushed to the back...

when u go down hill it should read less gas then u actually have, up hill, more than u have, but we all know the gauge is an inaccurate form of gauging the amount of gas remaining

in addition to what jatan said with o2, ks, fuel filt., iacv, i would also try cleaning the maf sensor element with a little bit of denatured alcohol and a q tip, then give the ecu a few hundred miles to adjust. The maf probable doesn't really affect anything as much as the others, but it doesn't hurt to clean it every now and then.
