After going to the track a few days ago my trap speeds and ET's weren't what I thought they should be. I seem to be a couple tenths and a couple mph slower, most of the time, than others with the the JWT/ECU, VI and similar other mods.

My harlan is mounted under the hood, so I rewired it into the cabin and mounted it on top of my dash. Went to the highway and made some 2nd and 3rd gear runs to activate the VI. After about 5 or 6 activations of the harlan it flaked out on me and started blinking. After that the VI would not open until the car was turned off and back on again.

Looks like I am going to have to go with another rpm switch.

Damn, sorry to hear that. I hope you get the problem resolved. At least now you know why your 1/4 was worse. Good luck to ya, keep us updated.

ohhh, I like that second one. But yhea a little pricy.

I know of one from summit racing that I might use. It could be that first one, but I didn't think it was made by MSD.

Now I'm beginning to worry about mine. I do have a light hooked up to my RPM switch and haven't seen it not come on though. Who knows what's going on under the hood though. Enough people have reported problems with the harlan that I think I would swap it out first chance I get. Let us know how the summit racing switch goes.

couldn't you use hte directions to make a shift light work for hte VI, just take the wire that will power hte light at a certain rpm and run it to hte VI?

Mine flakes out every once in a while and it's always done it since I bought the unit a year ago. I just run a toggle switch if I see it flake out during a run. Sometimes I'll just flip the switch at the top of 2nd and just leave it open the whole rest of the run.

How would that open the VI?

well doesn't it need 12 volts to power hte light? and doesn't hte rpm switch send 12 volts to hte MEVI
so take hte 12 volts and sent it too where the rpm switch would

Yup, I noticed that too! When I ran mine on the dyno, it occasionally would not open. I don't know why. Guess it's a little flaky. I also bought the MSD one but found it was huge unlike the harlan which was nice and small and didn't need any "pills"

The bad part is that once it flakes out it wont work again till the car is turned off. I wonder how many times I drove around w/o a functioning VI. I wasn't for sure, but I knew I usually was not getting the top end power I should have.

Yep.

That's the great thing about the toggle switch. I flip it a couple times and the Harlan clears it self of the "flake" instead me having to restart the car.

Toggle switch is a good idea, but for the money I have spent on this set up I want my VI to open like it should every time. I am getting a new switch.

Nealoc mentioned a switch from summit racing. Search is dis-abled, so I couldn't find the thread. You should look for that one. He had to set to something 2600 rpm to open correctly at 5200 rpm on the maxima becuase the switch was made to really work on 4 bangers or V8s, don't remember exactly.

It may be quirky to set, but apparently at least it's reliable, un-like the Harlans.

The MSD switch PN 8950 doesn't appear to have a coil-per-cylinder mode.

Has anyone here got the MSD to work? What setting?

Thats the switch I am going with. it's part #sum-830449. It's $45 and neal said he has not had one problem with his.
