Alternator problem

Hi,
I have an alternator problem. My mechanic says the alternator does not charge the battery to the levels it is supposed to. Seemingly, the current to charge the battery is less than normal.

I heard about the Maxima Alternator recall. I contacted both the Nissan folks and the local dealership. They say my VIN is not affected by it. But how could they precisely say that my car does not have the problem without looking into the car? How can they be so sure? Has it happened to someone that they initially said its not affected and then later found to be affected? In that case did they pay back the money or just fixed it free of cost?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!
Jay
