If you want slightly smoother shifts, go with Redline D4 ATF. By slightly I mean just that...it's hardly perceivable, but well, it's peace of mind for me.

But almost any ATF as long as it is Dextron III is fine for the Maxima. Drain and refill it every 15k and your transmission will last a long time.

synthetics will resist thermal break down much better than conventional. heat is what kills most transmissions.

I use Redline D4 ATF. I also recommend it to all of our customers for transmission longevity and keeping tranny temperatures down under extreme conditions

you should be okay if you don't do any extreme racing at road courses or drag racing. for daily driving, conventional ATF is sufficient. Synthetics are just better overall.

dmb: You'll need approximately 4 quarts. I think Nissan dealers charge around $15-25 for the drain if you bring your own fluids. If you want to get Amsoil stuff at dealer cost, shoot me an email for more details.

No, no. For the full drain with the sucker machine and everything. Not just the take off the pan and drain.

I recommend using the Royal Purple synthetic ATF. If you
are using the machine to suck out all of the fluid, it
takes 14 quarts (not that your car holds that much!).
This is the ONLY way to guarantee you have all of the ATF
the same. I do not know if this helps performance or is
really necessary, however, I believe your tranny will last
longer with a better fluid and a complete changeout of the
old fluid.
