shot remote? ...or alarm?

my factory alarm does not work anymore (yes, the battery was replaced). Nissan dealer wants $60 to check if it's the remote or the alarm....don't really want to pay that...
is there any other way to check that without going to the dealer?

thanks

Did you try reprogramming the remote. The instructions are in the FAQ's page 3. I would try that first, if you haven't.

well.......

well, it did not respond to programming... the first lights blinked (clearing of the codes), but the second time (storing the new ones) there was nothing.... should i take it that it's the remote? also, do 99-current remotes work with 4th gen?

thanks

It sounds like it could be the remote. One thing you can possibly try, if you want to. Call the dealership and talk to the parts person. See if they have one in stock or maybe sitting around. Ask if you can try to program it before buying it, to be sure it's "not something in addition to the remote". Tell them you'll leave your license with them or something, so they know you're not going to take off with it. Try to program that one, if it works, either buy it or tell them it didn't work and try to find one elsewhere. Depending on the dealership, the parts people usually are good about working with you, not trying to sell service.

On my 97, the LCU05 (multiremote contoller) runs off fuse #40 in the fuse panel, so check that first. But so does the vanity mirror lights, clock, and homelink, so if all of those are dead its most likely the fuse.

Edit: since you said the lights flashed when you tried to reprogram I doubt its that fuse, cuz I did not get any response when trying to reprogram when that fuse blew on mine.

Just try to reprogram the remote again make sure the doors are closed and locked.

remote?

does the fact that the lights flashed when I tried to reprogram the remote imply that the alarm itself is ok? otherwise why would it flash if it did not work???
am I right?

thanks
