How many cranks to start?

My '96 takes 3 or 4 cranks to start each time (it's very consistent), but when I started a friend's non-Nissan car of about the same age, it started as quickly as I turned the key. So, should my Max start up instantaneously, or is 3 or 4 cranks normal?

Hold on ! Define a crank? is it the number of turns you can hear the crankshaft make, or the number of key twists you have to make with the ignition switch. Let`s say my Max starts after 1-1.5 seconds of a single key twist. If I let a chance while the key is in `On` for all the selenoids, valves, and other bells and whistles around the engine to all turn on, I bet the engine would fire even faster.

RE:Define a crank

I define it as the number of crank rotations I can count with one key rotation. According to one person, an older battery can cause it to take more rotations to start. Maybe that's the key? I have an Interstate battery, but I don't know how old it is.

Mine takes one to two cranks when hot or cold but if it's been sitting for an hour or so after driving, it can take 5 or 6. If I let go of the key and try again, it starts first crank. Drives me crazy!!!

One crank. Mine starts on the first crank, though not as quickly as when it was new. For awhile I was getting 2 cranks but that's because my starter was sketchy. Dealer tried to tell me that the horrible noise I was hearing was the ****ing throwout bearing ...yea we all know how much noise the throwout bearing can make when you're starting the car with the clutch in and how the noise "spins down" just as you disengage the starter....oofa.

Have 98 Maxima since 01. Had problem with starting, needed few cranks many times. Now when I got car, I immediately changed plugs with Bosch Platinum(??). Three months later changed battery. One year into ownership, changed starter and battery. Still had problems. Exchanged starter with Nissan starter and appears fine.

On guy here had that starting problem and indicated was a faulty cranking sensor, for about $50US?.

I had the same problem that just started happening one day, my car suddenly took 2-3 cranks to start...it was a new starter so i know that wasn't the problem, i changed the plugs, fuel filter, crank sensor...still my problem persisted, Soon my starter blew again and I took it to a shop and STILL after a new one it took 2-3 cranks...So I got on the phone with nissan and started troubleshooting my problem. Right away they suggested that I drop the tranny and check the ground wire between the tranny and the engine block...sure enough I took out the tranny and after 2 minutes w/ a grinder and a new fitting...My car started right up and sounded like new. If you have a problem starting your car first crank...a simple way to check is the engine starter is 180 degrees, mine was jumping from 80-120 but not enough to turn...so go to a local shop and have then check it out.

Good Luck

1 crank here, if I get it on the first turn of the ignition switch.

On occasion, I'll pull back on the ignition switch too quickly (for about 3/4 a crank...oops), and miss the engine start. Then when I immediately try to crank her again, she takes 5-6 turns of the crank for her to start. Does this happen to you all ever?

This is very consistent behavior if I miss the 1st crank. I wonder what happens exactly when I miss the crank? weird.

Do you have to leave your car in neutral all the time, when you park?

Work those rear brake pads... crank the ebrake!

I'm thinking about getting a good alarm system with autostart as well... but the only thing deterring me is the fact that I will have to leave it in neutral at all times. 1st gear in park is like another security system of it's own! haha
