It could be that the fan has finally collected enough dirt, leafs (?) and other stuff; that you can easily clean when you open it up. Or the other way. I can sell you a used one for any price you name (+shipping ); i'm going to throw it away anyway.

I just installed the "fan-cozie" doohickie on Tuesday to stop that annoying ticking noise - if anyone hasn't done this I highly recommend it, as I can no longer hear the fan at all. Next up, my stupid A-pillars...

I removed the fan during the install. It took me ~45 minutes to do the entire thing. Presumably you have a Haynes/Chiltons, but here's what I remember:

1. remove the glove compartment. 4 screws across the top and 2 on the bottom. Use a socket driver if you have one (I don't understand why the heck they even put the phillips heads on the screws).

2. Remove the "lower dash trim" - it's that piece right in front of your door sill. Pull out towards the center console after removing the "plastic nut" thingy.

3. You can now access all of the screws of the fan, but since it's a squirrel cage fan there's an additional ~3" inside the housing so you'll need about ~3" to drop the fan straight out. I loosened my dashboard (removed the hex nut that was under the lower dash trim piece) and unscrewed some of the metal supports for the glovecompartment to give it some additional flex (this will all make sense when you remove the glove compartment).

4. The only annoying thing was that after I had shoved my dash around I had pulled it past the rubber weatherstripping next to the hinge. I used a little paintcan opener doohicky to hook the weatherstripping and pull it back past the dash.

5. I didn't have any squeaks or rattles after reassembly - I'd consider this low-risk.

I just realized that you may understand all of this already and wanted to know how difficult it was to change/clean the bearings/bushings themselves.
