Service department says my crankshaft and one rod has to be replaced. The engine has 40k miles on it. But other things that i dont like about my 99se are:

1. Rattles like crazy
2. Poor fit and finish of interior parts
3. Paint is horrible
4. A lot of wind and road noise
5. Auto tranny

Now I loved my 96 Maxima and i had no problems in 60k with that car. Maybe i got a dud i dont know, but i no longer like my car!

oh yeah ask people like JimW, BarryNYC, Jose, JeffO, etc.. and they will tell you that i baby my car - its not abused.

-ok sorry

-end of rant

Man that totally sucks, 40K and needs a crank and rod! Sounds like a lemon to me. Does your state have lemon laws? Since it's a '99, you might want to contact the local Nissan rep to see if they might extend the factory warranty. If they won't replace the engine, they may meet you half way on the price.

Are you familiar with Lemon Laws? They vary from state to state, but typically read something like this:

(1) The same nonconformity has been presented for
repair to the manufacturer, its agent, or its authorized dealer
four or more times but the same nonconformity continues to exist;or
(2) The vehicle was out of service to the consumer
during or while awaiting repair of the nonconformity or a series
of nonconformities for a cumulative total of 20 or more business
days during any 12-month period of the warranty,
provided that the consumer has notified the manufacturer directly
in writing of the existence of the nonconformity or series of
nonconformities and allowed the manufacturer a reasonable period,
not to exceed 15 calendar days, in which to correct the
nonconformity or series of nonconformities.

In other words, the dealer failed in repeated attempts to remedy one particular warranty defect or the consumer was without the car for a long time due to a series of warranty repairs. This does not fit the situation of AJ99SE.

Hey AJ99SE....

What were the symptoms that brought you to the dealer anyway? Was the motor "rapping"?

More like a knocking

It sounds like someone is beating the bottom of the motor with a hammer. The noise gets worse the hotter the engine is, I guess the hotter and thiner the oil is. Its in the shop now and the dealer is waiting to hear from nissan. I guess the dealer is trying for a new engine but nissan must approve it first?
