My auto 95 SE tachometer for some reason today won't go over 2000rpm. For rpm over 2000, the needle just stops at 2000. It works fine under 2000rpm so the needle is not sticking. The engine and car work fine. The tranny shifts fine too. Any idea what could be the problem or how to troubleshoot it?

I read before that Daniel Martin suggested to somebody with erratic tachometer to check connector M82. Where is that connector exactly?

On the rear face of the Combination Meter

Combination Meter is what Nissan calls the instrument cluster, the assembly which includes the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, along with a slew of indicator and warning lights. There are three connectors on the rear face of the Combination Meter: M82, M83, and M84. M82 is situated near the speedometer and fuel gauge.

You may backprobe connector M82 at the rear of the Combination Meter. M82 is a white plastic connector with 14 positions. Viewed from the harness side, identify terminal #3 which is in the upper row, third from the left. The wire at terminal #3 is white with a green stripe. Measure the voltage between terminal #3 and ground while the engine is running. The factory service manual says the voltage should vary in direct proportion with engine RPMs, but does not provide any specific values. If the voltage you measure at this point fluctuates wildly, that indicates the defect lies "upstream", probably in the wiring between M82 and the ECM. If the voltage is steady but the tach reading is erratic, the defect lies "downstream", in the combination meter assembly and possibly the tachometer instrument itself. The delicate Flexible Printed Circuit connection in the combination meter is a potential trouble spot. Cracks and cold solder joints in the Combination Meter printed circuit board could also produce this symptom.

Another thought

When I installed my JWT Pop charger, I had the same problem. SO...I opened the hood and saw I forgot to reconnect the grey clip to the intake sensor. Could you have bumped this clip loose? My car would only rev to 2,000 rpm and stop there like it hit a rev limiter until I fixed the problem.

Just a thought if Dan Martin's words of wisdom don't solve your problem.... Good luck!

Important distinction

There is an important distinction to make. Your engine wouldn't exceed 2000 rpm. The engine in NiMax's car is operating normally. His symptom is that the tach won't tell the truth.

I will check the Intake Sensor connector in case it is loose. I have not worked on the engine for a while so it is less likely. But again anything possible.

Tomorrow I will take a part the Instrument Cluster and check as Daniel B. Martin suggested.

Before I went to work today, I stop by the Nissan Dealer. They need the car for a whole day to troubleshoot it as well as minimum $100 to $150. That is not guarantee anything.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The car shifted fine. It goes all the gears except the tachometer needle won't go over 2000rpm.

I have checked the Intake Sensor connector and it is fine.
