strange whining noise
I have this whining noise on my car that goes up and down with the engine speed. I have had people tell me that its the power steering or its "accessory whine". Whats "accessory whine"? If it is the power steering, how hard would it be to replace and how much would it cost? Thanks.

i've gotten that whine as well. do you have a system in your car? i had that whine for the longest, and the RCA connectors to my amp went bad, creating a whine.
or..it could also be an alternator whine.

check for power steering fluid level, it is in a round container near the radiator fuild tank and winshield washer fulid tanks; compared to those two, the power steering fluid container is closer the firewall. if low: fill up with ATF, atomatic transmission fluid.
or
it could be ur alterantor going bad, go to autozone and let them test it for free

If you have an auto and more of a rattling noise, it could be the power brake hose causing it. It's the hose coming from the brake fluid container:
--------
Subject: Power brake check valve hose creating dash rattle noise.
Vehicle Involved: 1995-1998 Nissan Maxima. Vehicles built before February 4, 1998. Automatic Transmission only.
Condition: The above listed Nissan vehicles exhibit a steady rattle noise during the following conditions. Vehicle stopped with engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, automatic transmission in gear, and accessories off. The cause may be uneven airflow through the power brake check valve. To eliminate the rattle noise it is necessary to replace the existing power brake check valve hoses. The new hoses are longer and dampen the flow of air.
Repair Procedure: It is important to verify the cause of the noise. Conduct the following test in an open area, and secure wheel chocks to stop the vehicle from unexpected movement. With engine idling, transmission in gear, accessories off, and brake pedal depressed, listen for noise. Apply the parking brake, carefully release the brake pedal, if the rattle noise stops, replace the power brake check valve hoses. If the rattle noise is not coming from the power brake check valve, look for other causes of the noise.
New power brake check valve hose numbers include part number 47471-4L700 and part number 47472-4L700. When installing the new hoses correctly position the orientation marks on the hose to the mating part. Confirm that there is at least 10 mm clearance between the hoses and surrounding components. Verify that the power brake check valve points toward the engine, and the hose and valve are clear from any foreign material.
--------
The power steering needs Dexron III fluid. The Dexron III stuff is ATF. Go to an auto store and buy the Dexron III ATF (don't get any other type). I put in the regular Power Steering Fluid before and my steering became jerky in the cold weather (fluid was freezing I guess). I just replaced as much as I could with Dexron III ATF and the jerkying is gone

sure someone didn't sneak a s/c under your hood? that could cause whine...
as they advised, check your power steering fluid. every winter, my maxima for some reason (even the new 02 sentra i had) loses power steering fluid right when it gets cold out. i never have found out why or where it was/could be leaking. i just put some more fluid once every december and let it be.

I have a whine on my car and I am 90% sure it is the alternator. I have a friend who also has a 97 Maxima SE and he got a recall notice from Nissan about the alternator. He got a free alternator out of the deal. HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ABOUT THIS?????
Thanks,

Call up a local dealer and give them your VIN and they'll tell you if you are under the recall or not
