Ignition Coil Question

Hi all,
Firstly I would like to say that this is extremely informative forum and I am happy to be a part. I would love it even more if I had the ability to search the threads. That said, My 1999 Maxima was diagnosed with P1320 and multi cylinder misfire by the dealership. I found a mechanic wo said he would install the coils for me for $50 if I had all six coils. I just ordered the six coils however I had 2 choices, Hanshin or Mitsubishi. My question is does it really matter, if I am replacing all coils, which manufacturer I use. I tried to look at my coils but could not find the name any where.
Please email me or post responses.

Thanks in advance.

Sandeep

Was the dealership able to diagnose which cylinder was misfiring? Cause I have the same problem with multiple (random) misfires but when I hooked it up to a portable self diagnostic computer, It was only able to tell me there are random misfires....Can the dealership pull up a history of the misfires to locate exactly the cylinder? Maybe you wont have to replace all of the coils?

Theres been many threads on this. The 99's have problems with coil packs. I went through this for 3 months replacing one coil at a time. When my third coil went out, I just went ahead and replaced the remaining ones. All problems solved. I went with the Mitsubishi coil packs. About $55 apiece from Courtsey Nissan.

I got 1 Hanshin from a dealer in CA when I was having problems. They can be tested individually with a multimeter - no need to blow $ on 6 if you only need 1 or 2. Your mechanic should be aware of this, although it is not uncommon for them to recommend replacement of all 6, regardless.

Defective coils can test ok with a multi-meter. I've got 3 which test just fine but place them in the car and they will misfire. It took me a long time to determine which ones were misfiring because I never got a misfire code. Tested all coils hot and cold and all were within specs. After the third one started to go, enough was enough, intermittent misses for three months, caused me to just go ahead and replace them all. All problems solved.

What you do to check the coils, you take them out one by one(never have more than one coil disconnected at one time). If the car starts running worse after the coil is removed it means the coil is good. If the coil is removed and the engine doesn't sound any worse and run worse then the coil is bad...

Specifically, how did you test* your coils with the multimeter? What settings did you use? What connections did you probe?

*(The test that said they were ok, when they actually weren't)
