need help: threw a belt.

Well it was bound to happen and thank goodness it was at my home when I pulled in from work. As I am driving im my driveway I hear this loud squeeling noise coming from under the hood. I pull up and turn the car off and then start it back up. Still there. It is too cold and dard for me to diagnoise it so I go in the night and decide to take a look at it today. I get up and move my car over to the side so my wife can get out and look under the hood for a better inspection. I see no belt that usually goes on the crankshaft and alternator and the one that goes to the power steering is flat on the pulley but twisted 90 degrees after that. I look up the driveway and I see what is left of my drive belt which is now in shreds. So I am thinking great- time to replace the crank pulley.

Was this the right diagnosis? I don't think that replacing the belt would be anything more than a band aid fix.

I went ahead and ordered an underdrive pulley and it should be here by Tuesday.

How hard are they to install for the novice mechanic or would it be better to take it somewhere and have it done?

Thanks you all.

Any visible damage to the pulley? I would just change the belts first and see what happens. Changing the pulley is going to be much tougher.

It pretty much looks like the third picture in this thread from what I can see. It is too cold ot look closer. Maybe next weekend will be better for a quick peek.

Would it be normal for a belt to goin under 10,000 miles? It hasn't been that long since I took my supercharger off. Another thing is that I did see some wobble in the crankshaft pulley before I backed it up to move it (why would it just start to wobble now if it wasn't going bad). Keep in mind that I do have about 130,000 miles on the original crankshaft pulley, but maybe they are supposed to last longer.

I know what you are saying in replacing the belts first and then go on from there. Only thing is that did die right at my doorstep and I do drive a long way to and from work everyday. I would hate to get stuck on the highway and have to try to get this thing fixed/towed.

If you change your UDP, you will need a large 19MM socket, preferablya 1/2 inch, a 12-14MM closed upen end wrenches and a extension to remove the UDP and to lower your powersteering pump down so you can swap out that belt as well.

Where is the best place to get the belts?

I know that I need Gates belts, numbers K-060408 and K-040292, but where would I get those locally?

NAPA carries Gates.

Autozone, Pepboys, Advance auto and so on. Have them crossref the belt part numbers. Simple

try pushing on the edge of the pulley, thats how i found out mine was busted. But if you say yours looks like mine, then it probably is busted. It could have possibly gone bad due to a over tightened acc belt, or at least I'm almost positive thats why mine went bad.

Update

I went through the motions of getting the car jacked up and stopping the flywheel. When I went to go and try to get the bolt loose on the crankshaft pulley, the damn thing won't budge. It is on there tighter than a MF. I don't have a floor jack at my house and using a second factory jack didn't quite give me the leverage that I was hoping for (evern after lowering the car on the main factory jack). I put it all together and will take it to the shop probably tomorrow (or see how far I get before having to be towed). I probably won't make it too far though.

I was so close!

You know what that bolt will come off w/out any force or waste of your energy. I have done it on Max4speeds maxima. Grab a 1/2 socket, grap a breaker bar or a socket wrench long enough to get stock onto the control arm. Place it in front of the control arm. Turn the engine only. Dont turn on te car and that bolt will loosen itself. Just have to make sure the wrench is secure.
