i think i need to change my belts...

whats up everyone...Well my question is this..whenever i start the car and its cold, after sitting for a while, this sound is coming from the passenger side of the motor. My guess is its the belts, but it does go away after the car is warmed up. The sound is kinda high pitched like a chirping sound NOT that high pitch squeal when the slipt, i know that sound. So do you think they need replacemnt?, and if so how hard is it to do this?? My main concern is getting the correct tension on the belts, and making sure i dont **** anything up.
do they sell a tool that measures belt tension? or do i have to use the thumb method?

any help would be appreciated

thanks
Cris

MY belt's been squeaking for a long time. Same thing as you, really loud when cold but quiets down afterwards. You do have to eventually change it.

Had the same problem. A healthy dose of WD-40 worked great. I haven't heard it since.

I think I have the same problem. I get a squealing, churping noise from the belts when the car is cold, after it heats up it goes away. Sometimes It just does make the noise at all. Im probably going to replace the belts but Im not sure if I can do it myself. Anyone know how much the stealership would charge?Where can I spray WD-40?

the best way to spray the belts it to go under the front of the car by on the passenger side. You don't have to jack it up or anything, just kneel down and stick you head under the bumper, you see the belt spinning around (do this with the car running), Now either get some WD40 like said above or some Belt Dressing (heard a bar of soap works to). Aim the spray towards the belt where it runs underneath the idler pulley (the one that is used to tighten the belt). This way you can see the spray directly hitting the inside of the belt. Soak it pretty good and this should solve your problem. If not, you should check the belt to see if its worn and also check its tension. NEVER EVER over tighten the belt or you'll be sorry.

Please dont use wd40! That is a SOLVENT with a little bit of oil for flavor. But basically it is a solvent base. Good for cleaning, but a bad lubricant. Use graphite if you want to kill the belt noise. But the real resolution is to tighten the belt adjuster pulleys.

Wd40 COULD make the belt slip, it is like twiggy said only partly a lubricant but mostly an all purpose solvent. Just Replace the belts, or tighten them!

Ok. I'm getting the same problem but this was after I changed my alternator. And my belts are new because I changed my alternator about 2 days after I changed my pulley which is why I got new belts. I think I will take it to Jeff (Maximum Tuning)to get the right tension.
