Timing chain guides

Timing chain guides
My mechanic diagnosed that I need to have the timing chain guides and tensioner replaced. Common in the 95 and 96's I think. I have a 95SE w/137k and plan on keeping it for awhile. He quoted me for around $850. Is that reasonable? Thanks.

$850 no way. Is your engine the VQ30DE? then it has 3 chains. He is probably quoting on replacing guides and tensioners on all 3 chains. This job involves removing the timing chain cover. I'm not sure, but I think this can be done without removing the engine. At that price I would get 2,3 or more opinions from different mechanics. My guess is this job takes maximum 4 hours.
Any one has other toughts?

A competent mechanic should be able to do the job in under an hour.

So far we have 3 opinions: 1, 4 and 17 hours.
HAynes manual (page 2B-3) reads: " replacement of the camshafts, timing chains and sprockets is possible with the engine in the vehicule."
Thats good news. This eliminates the 17 hour opinion. I change my mind, for 2 hours.
