Replacing water pump..please help!!

A nissan dealer gave me a quote for $650 to perform this repair on my 1996 Maxima, is this about the right price? Would it be too much trouble if I do it myself? Has anyone done it before? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

It would be alot of trouble to do it, and the price is right as for a dealer. It's a pain in the ***!!! You have to take off the belts, maybe an engine mount, chain and then you can only get to the water pump. Plus I would imagine it would be a pain in the *** to replace it in such a tight spot. I would look what quote a mechanic would give you. I should be lower

Go to an independent shop. It is always best to get a few quotes. Call around, make friends, get cheaper prices. I did my own water pump, after about 8 hours. Not too bad if you have some knowledge.

So, if $650 sounds too much, what kind of price range should I look for? Does anyone know a good independent shop for this kind of repair in Kansas city metro area?

changing the water pump is a big job. i had mine replaced when i had to get my timing chain cover resealed. if you're not sure how to do it, don't!!!
also i agree, get it done at a different shop, but take the estiment from the dealer so another shop can beat it.
