Coils

Coils
I dont read this forum that often so i apologize if this has been answered elsewhere. My 99 Max was sputtering some so I took it to the dealership on Saturday for mtce. $1200 later I received new coils. This car has 135000K (84000 miles) on it. I have maintained it meticulously, synthetic oil, tranny flush with synthetic, new plugs, cleaned manifold, etc. Only the best for this car. The car has never been beaten, nice easy highway driving. I am finding it hard to believe that the coils should go this early. The service guy told me that Max's are notorious for this. Has anyone had this problem?? Has anyone complained to Nissan and gotten any kind of assistance with this. I recall the car doing the same sputtering around 80k but I just figured it was bad gas or something. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks, Ryan

Oh no, please check here next time first. Yes, coils are a very common problem with our cars. Coils from Courtesy Nissan cost $58 each and take at the most 30 min. to install. Very easy to do. Please, please ask here first before taking the car to a stealership.

Yes this is a common problem, but you just got raped by the stealership. You could've picked up a set of used coils for $50 or you could've bought new ones for about $60 each. The install is not that hard (you unplug a wire for each coil and remove 2 screws for each coil).
You live and you learn. Like fisher01 said, check with the org first since you can do most repairs yourself and save tons of $$$

I hate it when people gets ripped off by the dealer. Dealers are shooting themselves in the foot with their type of business practices. You could have called other dealerships and asked for the price on the coil packs. My Maxima has 115k and only needs 2 replaced because the boots are cracked due to oil leaking into the plugs because of bad valve cover gaskets. I had the gaskets replaced already, and I'm waiting for the new coils to arrive. Replacing the coil pack is not hard at all. Next time you'll know better.
