I havn't seen a battle of trannys or anything, but as you probably know, when gear ratio is increased you experience quicker acceleration, but when gear ratio in decreased you will be able to reach higher speeds. Hence, THEORETICALLY, an automatic's 4th gear (0.694:1) should be able to obtain higher speeds than a manual's 5th gear (0.795:1) although a manual would outaccelerate an automatic. As you improve one you lose the other so balance is found somewhere in between. However, it is possible that not many(if any) automatics ever reached the speeds 140+ due the the extra time needed for the acceleration or just lack of power. If the final gear it set too low you will never be able to redline the car or even come close.
What were your rpms at 140+ ?

I did the same had my needle buried. i dont think my bro's auto can do that, just bcuz it would take so much longer for it to get there than my car.

Im gonna take a wild leap here. Over in Japan you're probably lucky if you can drive over like 50mph so im guessing that they just had a short 5th cuz they needed the higher RPMS over there at like 40-50mph?

2 things that could make a difference. One is tire diameter, a smaller diameter then stock could cause a difference of a couple hundred rpms. The other is that tachs are not exact and can differe from car to car a couple hundred rpms

I highly doubt that^^^^^^^
Japan is the maker of the Skyline, the car that is so powerful and fast that we cannot even get them here in the US without special shipping them for like $80,000.

You'd need a nissan consult I or II to adjust your timing, and no that's not it. It is probably tire diameter like Mike said.

Ha, just wish I had the answer for that one...I had only done that once and wasn't paying attention to my rpm's at the time since I was on a highway and other cars were around

I have 235/45/17's on the max. they are virtually the same size as stock 15's. that would not make a difference would it? thanks for posting.

when you use the winshild defroster the a/c compresor kicks in
so the car's rpm's go up all car's are like that

Did nobody ask about tire size (diameter) yet? That too could account for much of the differences between readings.
