Removing rust around wheel well

I have a '95 86k miles and have some rust around the wheel well. No rust anywhere else. What is the best way of removing the rust so it doesn't spread? I live in the NE so rust is not my friend!

Noone answered this yet huh? Maybe the Detailing forum would be better?
I assume you mean INSIDE the wheel well? If you mean on the (painted) fender area around the wheel well thats a topic all its own involving rust removal, filler, matching paint, etc.

For wheel well rust and preventing it, here's a stab at what I do, I am sure others have ideas to add :
1. wash off all dirt
2. scrape off all rust, or wire brush it if appropriate
3. if still rust use acid treatment such as Navel Jelly (rinse it off well and let dry)
4. Rust-Oleum Primer (Rusty Metal Primer if any bad rust remaining)
5. After 24 hours finish with a good black metal enamel

It was 1 degree F. at my house in NY this morning, your a little late doing this now unless you have heated garage. Getting underbody ready for winter was discussed here in the org back in the fall. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I had the underbody sprayed for rust a couple of years ago. I started grad school for my MBA in August and unforunately I didn't have time to prep my car until now.

Well if you can't get the car inside somewhere, at least get some cans of WD-40 and spray the rust spots every few days. That should keep the water out and slow things down. Too d*** cold up here these days to be priming/painting.

When temps go above freezing its a good idea during the winter to go to car wash every two weeks to spray off the salt. Roads here are white with the stuff these days. Good luck with school.
