what's a midpipe for?

the midpipe replaces the black resonator box in short ram air applications. The midpipe ( which is about 8" long) is used as an air passage from the filter to throttle body to reduce the turbulant air your getting from under the hood and makes for a more laminar flow (less restrictive). With the stock resonator box on , laminar flow can't be achieved due to the resonator box having a passage that opens to a large box in the middle of it. Which collects air and builds up some back pressure. (That's why there is better responce at lower rpms with stock setup). With more throttle opening, the less restirce setup will add more power ( midpipe setup). Hope this helps

I ran the setup both ways in my 4th gen auto. I prefer the midpipe setup. Depends on what you want. If you like the way the car pulls off the line with the stock setup stay with that, but if you're looking for more pull at higher rpms, midpipe is the way to go. Plus it sounds mean at WOT. In the quarter mile, with the hacked air filter box (popcharger) I ran 2 tenths slower then with the midpipe attached.

I would say the best setup is a homemade hybrid. Build your own midpipe out of 3" exhaust and get a roof weather blocking thing to go around it to block heat.
In this pic I don't have the hybrid shield on. With the shield on I feel it is much better once the car gets warm. Also, go ahead and drill the hole in the fender anyway. Except don't make a 3" hole go 4" like this.
