See if you know the details.

I am going to replace my Knock Sensor and I am wondering how to go about removing the intake manifold in order to have access to the Knock Sensor. I know you can replace it without removing the intake but if it isn't that difficult I would rather take it out. Can anyone give me sort-of a step by step on how to remove the intake?

Read the FAQ you can do it without taking off the manifold. You need an extension bar 1/4" drive and a socket i believe 12mm

Taking off the intake manifolds is pretty simple...

Upper Manifold:
-4 bolts connecting it to the lower manifold
-2 bolts in the rear of the manifold connecting it to the brackets on that head.
-2 bolts on the EGR
-Unbolt the IACV (3 bolts)
-Remove the TB and throttle cable bracket
-Remove Wiring harness and brackets
-Unhook all the hoses (vacuum and coolant).

The hard part is remembering what was connected where. Now that I've done this several times, I can remove the upper manifold in about 20 minutes.

Lower Manifold:

-Remove fuel rail. You can leave the injectors in the rail, just unbolt the rail from the manifold and move it out of the way.
-8 bolts connecting the lower manifold to the engine.

That's about it...when you're done getting to the KS is really easy.

Well, I for one can't get my hand in there...but I also haven't replaced my KS yet.

If/when I have to, I'd take off the intake manifolds and do all of the following as well:

- Compression Test
- Replace spark plugs
- Flush fuel rail
- Change fuel filter
- Clean IACV

etc. Think of it as a general maintenance type of thing.

If you do it this way you need a u joint too. Also, I like the 3/8" drive for this since the extention's a little thicker and stronger. A trick I learned when I did this is that it's easier to get your left hand in there because of the way it's shaped.

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I will attempt to get in there without removing the manifold I think.

one thing I forgot to mention, it is good to have a telescoping magnet since it's easy to drop the bolt that holds the ks in.
