programming keyless entry remote

programming keyless entry remote
I bought a keyless entry remote from ebay and tried to program it using the following method:
Replacing Remote Controller or Multi-Remote Control Unit (LCU05)
Enter the identity (ID) code manually when:
-remote controller or multi-remote control unit LCU05 is replaced.
-an additional remote controller is activated.
ID Code Entry Procedure
To enter the ID code, follow this procedure.
Entering "Setting mode":
(1) Close and lock all doors.
(2) Insert and remove the key from the ignition more than six times within 10 seconds. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.) At this time, the original ID codes are eliminated.
ID code entry:
(3) Turn ignition key to "ACC" position.
(4) Push lock button on the new remote controller once (for example, if door is locked using the remote controller during this ID code entry enable state, a new ID code can be entered). At this time, the new ID code is entered. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.)
As you probably guessed, it didn't work. I checked the battery in the remote--3 volts. I think that's what it's supposed to be. When I bought my car it didn't come with any remotes, although I bought it used and I have no idea if it came with one originally or not. If it didn't, is it even possible to program a remote, or is there some kind of receiver or something that my car dosen't have? It's a 98 GXE.

see if your car has the "security and convience" package. is there a security light next to your power mirror switch? if not, you don't have the S+C package and thus, cannot use the keyless entry remote.

I didn't have any problem when I reprogrammed a remote I bought off ebay. I had one remote when I bought the car. When I looked for an another remote I realized there are two kinds of remotes (looks similar though) that sellers claim "for 95-99 Maximas" but FCC ID is different. I looked at the back of the remote and bought one with the same FCC ID.
FYI since you didn't have a remote when you bought your Max.

In my case it was A269ZUA078. The similar one I told you about has FCC ID KOBUTA3T. The only difference between these two kinds is that "KOBUTA3T" one does not have a panic button.
But I'm not sure if this applies to you because yours is 98.

I checked with remotesunlimited.com. You can get an FCC ID by specifying year and model. 95-96 and 97-99 have different FCC IDs but both starts with A269ZUA07. Only difference, according to the site, seems to be the last digit - 95-96 is 3 and 97-99 is 8. I looked again at my remote that came with my 96 and it reads A269ZUA078. Hum....

I don't have a pic, but it looks like the one in the link except I don't have a trunk release button. It has the big lock button, with unlock and panic(i guess) side by side underneath the big button.
