Lug Stud broken...Take to dealership to fix?
I was taking my wheel off to paint the rotor(the part that gets rusted) black yesterday, and one of the lug studs just broke off inside of the lug nut. I know that you can replace them one at the time, but is there a way to do it myself. They look like they are pressed in there by some kind of machine. Does anyone know anything about this?
I ordered some spare lug nuts and studs from rock auto.com today, but I don't know if I will need to just go to the stealership or not. I called them, and they told me it would be about a half an hour of labor...which is like $35 or less.

I has this happen to me a few times and I just went to R&S strauss and they fixed it right there. Took about 30 minutes.. Costs about 40$

i replaced all my front studs like this.
1. take off the caliper, mounting bracket, and rotor.
2. get a hammer.
3. hit the stud till it falls out.
4. put in new stud and screw on a lug.
5. tighten the lug, until the stud sits flush.

My question is why in the hell were you painting the rotor????

It' easy, I replaced all 5 of mine a couple days ago. just remeber, when you remove the caliper don't let it hang by the brake fluid line. Suspend it from one of the front spring coils by some wire. You don't want that brake fluid line to disconnect.
Also, the least amount of hammering you do on the stud the better. It's not really good for the hub to be hammerd like that. It can mess up the pressed bearings.

Well, maybe you don't. I just already had my caliper and rotor off for another job when I did mine.
Man this job is as easy as it gets. Don't take this to a stealership.Just do like the other guy said.Tap out the broken stud from the outside.Place the new stud in the hole from the back and screw a lug nut on it tight.Take off the nut and put everything back together.This is super easy.I wouldn't pay anyone $10 for this job it's that easy.

the rotor slides off and with it off, you know for the sure the stud is sitting in there correctly. So might as well take it off.
The only reason I could see taking the rotor off is if you drop the stud between the rotor and dust shield.

You got ripped...man...maybe a $2 stud...and you paid $40 for it...oh well

yeah, I was not sure how much of a difference it would make with stock wheels, but it is just cleaner. YOu don't see the glaring rust everywhere. The high temp paint I used was flat black though. I think it might look a little better if it was a gloss. I don't know. I might play around with it more when I get this arm better.
So it seems to be the general consensus that putting the new stud on there and screwing the new lugnut onto there until it drops into place is the way to go. Any other comments. I already ordered a pack of 5 lugnuts and a pack of 5 lug studs from rockauto.com because the stealership wanted $6 for one lug nut and another $6 for one lug stud, and then $35 for the service. This will help me considerably.

hello? response on the acorn lugs? Well, I am assuming that they have to be the ones, since the standard ones have a hole all the way through them.
I just got my lug studs in today. I will be changing that broken one out tonight. I know, I know...don't forget to get some Anti-Seize.

I mean, yeah, I do, but I didn't know they were called acorns until after I ordered the standard ones. Guess I should have known that. Oh well.
I got what I need now, and should be having someone help me do it this afternoon(due to the arm). I got some lug studs from rockauto.com, but they look kind of short to me. I guess I will see when I get them beside the stock ones, huh?
I have got to get back into my Max!!! I have been driving my mom's Buick LeSabre for the past 4 days and it is horrible. I mean, it is a nice car, but suck a boat-ee ride! To go from an SE sports suspension to that...murder. I was giving my arm a break from the shifting, but I have to have it back now! I miss her!
I wish I had my max yesterday...I pulled up beside this black sentra SE-R Spec V. He just thought he was the bomb. He was kind of revving it and stuff. I mean, I know they are quick, but the still are only like what 156hp or something? He was bone stock. Of course, I was in my mom's Buick and could do nothing about it. Very hard to swallow. ha ha

You would have commited suicide if you were me. I've been driving my girlfriends 1990 Geo Prizm for the past 6 months waiting for a VLSD tranny to show up. (my tranny melted)I gave up, and I should have the Maxima goin' on Monday.
I did the replacement surgery for the max's lug stud today. All went well, and I didn't even have to sedate her for long. ha ha
Actually, my dad did it, because of my arm. It really only took like 15 min like you guys said. I appreciate all that you helped me with. it is driving great!

Dude, Mitch, try them yourself. I thought I was going to have a time getting the studs out of the rotor/hub, but that was not all that difficult at all. I mean, the whole project (from jacking up and taking off tire to putting back on and putting jack up) was like 15 min. Of course, I only replaces one of the studs, but more would not be a problem either.
