Hey I did read the 4th gen FAQ, but, his car is a 5th gen different set-up.

Anyways, I'm trying to hard-wire a BEL 985, and I'm 90% there, but I can't figure out where to attach the leads.

Can anyone please help? I've tried several different sources in the fuse box, to no avail.

Do I need to have one lead coming off a power source? I've tried the cigarette lighter and some other things but nothing is working.

I'm pretty sure only lead needs to go to a negative and the other to a positive lead, but I can't figure out where to go with it.

Please help as I am stumped!

most radar detectors are 12V. try the cigarette lighter source to pick up your power there...

although i still perfer go to autozone and buy one of those 1to4 12V splitter, which worked well for my neons and radar in the last 1 year no problem.

 

I figured it out! It's quite simple actually. Here's how I installed my BEL 985 radar detecting unit.

1) Take the hard-wiring kit and cut off the female end of the kit(of course assuming you've already attached the male end.

2) Splice both ends of the wire from the female side. Make sure you give yourself decent leeway to attach both ends of the connectors as needed. It's usually best to give yourself at least 10% extra wiring just zip-tie or twisty tie a bundle when you're through and you'll be all set!

3) Unplug the cigarette lighter fuse. I think it's marked 10A or something like that on the lefthand side, above two 7.5 fuses.

4)After disconnecting the fuse, attach one lead of the stranded wire around one leg of the fuse and re-attach.

5) With the second lead of the wire there is a small bolt maybe 8-10mm in size(perhaps smaller). Just to the top left of the fuse box. It's acutally pretty close in proximity to the fuse both. Unscrew it just a bit and wrap your other lead around the bolt and screw back down.

Voila! You now have a hard-wiring kit.

I did this with my BEL 985 set, but I am pretty sure it would work with any other radar detector.

Oh yeah, a couple of other things to keep in mind. You want your radar detector as high up on the windshield as possible to provide for the greatest range. My 985 was wired and I used velcro on the passenger side of the rear-view rear. It's a snug fit but it fits and is in visual level.

One great thing about having the tint near the top of the window in my car is, you can't even see the unit from outside of the car, without really looking.
