How many miles can you put on this motor before anything major needs done to it? I mean, I hear they're pretty bulletproof. If they're well maintained, will they basically outlive the car?

if its well maintained and not driven TOO hard, it could easily go past 220k+

jesus, 360k?!?! That's insane.

Anyway, the main reason I'm asking is I just bought a max with 128k. The car was super well maintained. The guy was the original owner and did everything to it. All the recommended services and tune-ups, oil change every 3k on the nose. The car runs great. I've had absolutely no problems with it at all. Just wondering how long it will last I guess.

I have heard over and over that with regular oil changes and maybe a coilpack or alternator here and there, you can expect 200K+ trouble free miles from the motor. Transmission, brakes, suspension, etc. are for a different discussion.

I have over 160,000 miles on my max and she is still running like new. Well maintained by previous owner. Only thing replaced on the engine was the knock sensor when I got it. but just in case I have another engine waiting to go in with only 50,000 miles on it.

Would not be surprised if the engine would last half million, or more ,with proper maintenance...Here in Ny the body would go before the engine, but in the south, the car could last forever...
Im working for a Honda dealership, and yesterday we got a 98 Honda Civic Lx ,automatic, with 384 k. I was thinking to get it and top the 400 k mark...The owner drove a lot ,and did oil changes monthly... I d love to see my max go that high...

Well, I guess I won't worry about the motor then. But someone brought up a good point. What about the auto transmission in these cars? I don't even know what it is, nor have I read about them at all. How solid are they?

I think it was car and driver, or maybe motortrend had a honda, and they hit 600K mi by just doing regular maintence. The thing is though, if you go over to germany, or other european nations, it's not unusual to have a car hit 600 or 800k mi, it's expected.

the transmission is what transfers power from the engine to the wheels.......heheheheheheh. Anyway, it all depends on what was done to the tranny. If it was run hard, then you'll prolly have problems later on. If it was riven well, then it will last a long time.

I would go on record to say that the VQ (and the VG for that matter) would last as long as ANY other engine on the planet.

U know in japan, motors are swapped out for new ones at about 60,000 miles. they considered that is old and would not like to have "high mile" vehicles. thats why we get "low mile" motors here from japan. that's what my friend from japan told me.

I've heard that too. That's weird. Do they not know they make the best motors durabilty wise(and in the case of the VQ, just best lol).......?

Well i have about 220K on my auto transmission max.

The extent of my maintenance is:
oil change every 10,000 or so miles using the cheapest oil.
Change spark plugs every 100,000 miles
Use premium fuel.

There you go. That's my method for success.
Oh and just so you know I found out my tranny can go at least 215,000 miles before it needs to have it's fluid changed

Major part replacement list:
Alternator 180K
CV axles 190K
Starter 175K

I guess it is all about how you drive as far as listening to the rev of your enginge relative to how hard you push the pedal for a comfortable shift. Some people just push the gas carelessly.

Well I have a '98 Maxima that just hit the 100,000 mile mark the other day. I bought the car in 2002 with 45,000 miles on it. All I have done to the car is regular maintenance and I had to replace the knock sensor, EVAP valve, EVAP canister, and the starter.

The '96 on the other hand was a mistake to buy. I bought it cheap with 162,000 miles on it. The seller lied to me about the condition of the car and probally beat the heck out of it. Ive only driven it about 300 miles since Ive gotten it and its needed over a $1000 dollars in parts. I just keeping finding stuff he neglected to fix or has broken. After I fixed everything the car runs great and it should be able to goto 250,000 miles, I hope.

I'm glad to hear all this. I plan on keeping this car for the rest of my undergrad and probably through law school, at which point I'll actually get a job and be able to buy a new one.

HOLY ISH!!!!! I had no idea you had so many miles!!

And yet you are able to run 14.1 in the 1/4...

Simply amazing!

PS: How's the tranny and everything holding up?

I'm really suprised some people don't realize how great of an engine the VQ is. We all know it's a fabulous, "the best V6 on the planet", but it's bulletproof as well. I expect to go 250k + on mine easy.

I spoke with a guy at the dealership, he said someone came in with a 95 Maxima, with 450,000 miles on it, JUST FOR AN OIL CHANGE!!!!!!!!!
