"Service Engine Soon" indicator is on. Please, help!

Hi everyone!
I have a 98 Maxima GLE, which I bought 3 months ago. Yesterday the yellow "Service Engine Soon" indicator came on, and it stays on steady (does not flash) today as well. I first thought that it tells me that the oil/filter change service is due soon (although I just changed it about 1.5 months and 2,500 miles ago). The owner's manual, however, officially calls it a "Malfunction Indicator Light". It also claims that this light comes on when the "emission control system malfunction has been detected". Could you please, tell me whether this statement actually reflects what's going on with the engine? It's weired, since when purchasing the vehicle, I got the results of the emmission test, and they were excellent... What exactly could it mean or what financial impact could I potentially expect to hit? Should I take the car to the Nissan dealer (more expensive), or should a private garage be able to fix the problem?

I apprecite all the help I can get from you.
Best regards,
Eugene.
