I have a 99 Maxima GLE with about 74000 km (about 47k miles).

I've lately noticed an odd problem with the car when its stopped in gear (any gear, R, D, 1/2), say at a redlight.

I can feel "bumps" or "kicks" coming from the tranny. It feels as if the tranny is trying to push the car forward.

It only happens when I'm stopped. When moving, the car drives fine. Also when I'm stopped in neutral or park, the car is fine as well.

Some folks told me it could be the coils, but I don't see how that can cause a problem when this only occurs when the car is stopped and in gear.

check your tranny fluid man, you could have a leak.

 

Im having the same problem. 50k miles on my 1999 max. Im 90% sure now its a/some coilpacks going bad. I know that feeling, its at stoplights for me too, and only in drive aswell. I doubt its the tranny, 99s have a big problem with the coilpacks, and this is one of the symptoms.

 

My 99 has done the same thing 3 times w/ only 32k on the odometer.

 

it could be the engine. Coil pack, I know ****en 2000 maxima that was doing crazy kicks like that because of the MAF.

 

I see some people having the same problem with the Tranny (on this Thread). Well I have question from all of the people saying they have the same problem. I like to know if the car has this feeling to it that makes you think something is is loose when it kicks. It feels like the car is not solid, it feels like someone forgot to tight the screws. I do have the same kind problem as well; I have 58k on car right now. And to me it feels like the tranny is loose, more like an Engine mount problem.
For what I see and complain i see people have about the Maxims that where made in Year 99, I Come to the conclusion, they did not make them as good as year 95-97. .

 

i feel the same thing in my 97. maybe they all do it. never bothered me too much.

 

Is this a theory? or you are saying this is a fact? I just don't understand why a bad Coil pack make the car kick? I just like to know more about this.......

 

Humm so it is build that way? I don't know, I have heard so many things from so many diffrent people, so I don't know what would be correct. I heard that whent he tranny shifts with a mild kick that's good. If the tranny has no kick to it, it could be bad, because it could start Slipping.

 

I thought when you have a bad coil you will get the CEL. I guess thats not the case.

 

Only when the misfire is big enough for the ecu to take notice. Thats why some people wait till it gets worse to let it set off the SES light to know exactly which coil pack is bad.

 

Is it safe to do this while the car is running? Or should I turn it off everytime I change the coils.

And to the other poster, yes it does feel like the car is 'loose', sometime's it makes some creaking noise when turning lock-to-lock, but I think that is because the FSTB bolts have gotten slightly loose.

Apart from that the car is fine, no interior rattles at all.

 

I should also add that when idling in PARK, you can feel the engine vibrating (as the other poster mentioned previously). It's not really a big thing, but at the same time it wasn't like this before. Before, you couldn't even feel the engine idling in PARK. I'm guessing this is related to the coil packs too.
