Transmission Shopping: help me find something with limited slip !

1997 Nissan Maxima SE - 5 Speed

Hey, just got back from the dealership today. The chariot got a good bill of health for the most part. I had some banging with my shifter after a night of drag racing which turned out to be the shifter hitting the heat shield. They fixed that up, and looked over everything. Said the car is in great condition, no leaks but need to keep an eye out on the transmission.

(read with caution - i have no idea )
the deal with the transmission from what i can understand is that there is some type of yolk that spins going into it or something another. whatever this is on the my max is a little loose and given more time they say it will get worse.

As for as they can tell its something that is going to happen on down the line. Well given the price of putting in a new transmission. Im going to go ahead and start snagging the things I need.

Question 1: When replacing the transmission is there anything other than the clutch and flywheel I should check on replacing at this time ?

Question: 2: Im going to start researching on what transmission is can use to replace this one that has the Limited Slip. What cars models have the limited slip that will work with my 97 Maxima.

If you guys could post up some of the cars with the transmissions that will work I would appreciate it, along with anything else I will need, like changing the drivers side axle and such. (just not sure ?) I may have read something about the 2001 maxima that was a limited edition that has limited slip and stronger gears ?

If someone can do some searchs for me and post up the thread links that will be awesome.

I appreciate you guys babying me along with the mechanical side of things.

The 96+ I30 and the Canadian Maximas both have LSD that fit. There are aftermarket differentials available too. Here is a good link: http://maxmods.dyndns.org/index.php?...pDifferentials

Thats about all I'm good for, though im in the same boat you're in......I want some LSD.

Hey Ceasar,

Question 1: Well you nailed the big parts, flywheel and clutch. My suggestion if you haven't already done so is to get a lighten flywheel, and from seeing how you drag race a lot, you should really consider a act stage one clutch at least (I dunno if you already have these, if you do, then disregard). Also you will want to replace the throw out bearing maybe do the main engine seal and main tranny seals while your in there. Also you my want to replace the clutch fork. I dunno if it's the same on the newer maxima's, but the old ones tend to develop stress fractures over time which can cause them to break.

Question 2: As the guys mentioned above.

Either way, I've really liked your car. Love watching the videos clips you post! I got at least 7-10 of em on my computer!!!

I dont think you will find another tranmission that will bolt in honestly. The tranny specialist who fixed my 1st and 2nd gear problems said that they dont use this tranny in any other nissan car (thats hes aware of). Therefore aftermarket parts to make it stronger just dont exist. Maybe you can try some cryo-treatment or something that ive read about before.

I myself am in the market for a new spare motor/tranny soon and i want to get one with LSD preferably.

Maybe you can go the custom route and use the 6speed '02-up tranny. Im almost positive that tranny is beefier than the tranny in the 4th gens simply because of all the extra power in the 5th gens.

Good luck...BTW, you really need to come visit us central florida maxima guys and have a track day!!

Ceasar, I love your beastly machine. I guess I always assumed that hoy had LSD because you were running such good times and it always seemed that you had equal wheel spins also. I will also be in the market for a tranny in the fall. I'm hoping to get an LSD and do the following: Flywheel, Clutch, Short shifter, Cryo?, Axles?. The last two are only if my bank account permits. I looke forward to seeing what you can run with LSD. Good luck.

I say instead os spending that money on a new tranny just get the Quaife LSD unit. Thats a true 50/50 LSD unit.

Transmissions that can be used would be 96-99 I30T 5-speeds or the canadian 95-99 Maxima SE. The canadian GXEs and GLEs do not have the 5-speed with LSD.

the thing is my transmission is going to kick the bucket in another 6 months or so. im not real sure on what they said. something about its ok now but some piece going into the tranny is supposed to be tight and mine has play or is getting loose. and because of this i should go ahead and plan on getting a new tranny in the next year.

this being true, i would rather put a transmission in that already has limited slip, like the ones from the infiniti models but im not sure on any thing ?

i know i have read other 4th gen folks are successfully doing this, but without search im nothing ! lol thanks for the post and info
