Engine noise at cold start up help...

Hi,

I read some time ago that there is a fix for a noise that is heard from the engine bay during start up when cold. My max has about 100K miles on it and started making this noise. From what I remember the replacement (tension adjuster?) is fairly cheap from the dealer, but the labour is involved. I have never seen the actual instruction on how to replace the part. Does anyone have these instructions posted anywhere.

Sorry if this was mentioned earlier in the forum, but you ust don't pay attention until it affects you.

I'm convinced that its a timing chain noise. I found it listed on the TSBs. Does anyone have the Counter Measure chain tensioner and guide installation instructions?

Thanks,

I am hearing a similar noise on my 99 max. Its a humming noise from the engine only on cold starts. It last only a couple of seconds.

My car does the same thing but I think it is the idler pulley. Sounds crappy but it goes away. Can't find a pulley now where so I don't know what to do??

if its from the timing chain area, then it is the chain tensioner. cost is around $50-70 for the part. its pretty easy to do. i think $200 is fair to have it done though if you don't do much on your car.
we had a good discussion of it last fall when i did mine if you can find it in a search. Stephen Max helped me a lot.
I may have some old pics I can dig up.
