Engine Whining

I need you help. This morning when I started my car, the engine was whining. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side belts. I think it might be the pulleys or the water pump. The weird thing is, it was fine last night but when i started the car in the morning it was a loud pitch whine. It sounds like you are in reverse and hear that wailing noise. Please help. I think it is the water pump or the drive belts.

belts could make a whining noise? I have a terrible whining noise too, i checked the alternator and its not that, someone told me it could be the PS pump or something, its really loud you can hear it if someone else drives your car you can hear it outside...

Still havn't figured out what it is.

Make sure that it is not the bearings goining out on the water pump! THat would be a bad mistake, belts for the H20 pump. GLuck

Do you think that someone got under there without you knowing it and put a supercharger on it? ha ha ha
That might account for the whine....

Other than that, I don't know what it could be.

wheres the water pump? I need a map of the major components in our engine =\ Maybe I can find a long enough extension to touch the pump and attach a screw driver to it and listen for whine...

(yes its ghetto but it damn works lol)

Mine also makes a high pitched whine at idle but not all the time, its barely audible and impossible to hear over the engine but it will also dissapear for a bit if I rev the engine a little. My belts were replaced like 40k ago along with the alternator.

Before you go & replace your water pump, check to make sure your belt is still good "No major cracks or chunks missing" and that it is still tight. You need to check somewhere in the middle of two pulley's and your belt shouldn't deflect "flex" more then 1/4". If your belt is in good condition & the tension is within the 1/4" limit, spray alittle belt dressing on the belt & see if the whining noise go's away. It's like $3 bucks for a can at the auto parts store. If that doesn't cure the problem then consult a mechanic to see if the water pump is going bad.....

Hey Guys,

I just got home from work and it's too dark to check anything now. I really think it's the water pump. Belt's should squeek, not whine. It sounds exactlyl the same as when you turn your steering wheel, but louder. Turning the wheel left and right does not affect the noise, so it's not the power steering. Belts were looked at on sunday by jiffy lube. The sound is in parallel with the speed of the drive belts. If i step on the gas, the sound gets faster and a little louder. It's not loud to the point where you can hear it over the engine after 2K rpm. but you can hear it from 2K and below. I will have my friend look at it tomorrow when he changes my rear pads, rotors, and front strut mounts. Thanks for all the responses!
