Whats Best: Drilled and Slotted Or Blank Rotors?
Hey guys,
It time for me to replace my rotors. I think im just goign to replace the front. This past weekend i took my wheels and and was going replace the brake pad bc they were squeeking and i though my pads were shot. When i got in there i found that the pad were brand new. I came to the conclusion that my rotors are what is shot.
Ive been researching rotors and i just cant decide. For normal street use would i be better off going with 1. Blanks, 2. Cross Drilled, or 3. Drilled and Slotted. Ive heard both side, i hear that drilled and slotted will eat threw pads quicker and also can warp from my type of use. I also heard they will be fine. Should i put the extra money toward the drilled and slotted or should i just got with blanks? Im defiently going the replace the pad when i get rotors. I just need help deciding which rotor 2 go with.
Also, on that 1 site, MaxMods, im the brakin section it has a link to a site that tells i about Bedding your Rotors. Has anyone done this before? Does it work? It seems like it is logical.
Thanks alot..
Sean

Sean,
For normal street use, I'd go with stock/blank rotors. If you have numerous high speed stops from 100 mph, you might get the dimpled ones. The Max stock brakes are plenty for USA type speeds.
I just replaced mine and breaking in the pads, I had to break hard from 60 mph about 5 times just to heat up the pads and bed them in. If you don't plan to take your car to the track or dragstrip stay stock. JMHO

I've had Stillen drilled rotors on my 97 for about 5 years now with no problem. I'm using Porterfield street pads and the performance is really good. The rotors have stayed true all this time which is really impressive. My stock rotors warped in no time. My only complaint with the drilled rotors is they seem to be noisy at speeds below 35 or so...sounds like a 4WD truck with knobby tires slowing down. If I ever replace these I may try slotted or blanks just to get rid of the noise.
The best rotors to stick with would be slotted or blanks. Crossed drilled rotors with good pads with stop the car nicely but the rotors will get hairline cracks in them. I have them so I know. Also crosseddrilled rotors are noisy as hell when stopping from high speeds. My next set is going to be slotted.
Well thanks... I was hoping on going to the track this summer. Im not sure what to get. I like the Drilled and Slotted bc of the look. I think i might go with both drilled and slotted. But dimpled and slotted is also a possibilty. Thanks alot guys.

Cross drilled rotors are really only good for show. Because of the holes in them, they reduce surface area which promotes cracking.
Of course there are exceptions, and some people can use them successfully... however, slotted are better than crossdrilled because they don't reduce surface area and don't promote cracking.
They also help prevent pad glazing by scraping a new pad surface on each revolution.

Okay, Sean, That is a lot of people that race consistently telling you to just get blanks. I will tell you the same. I don't race, but use my max everyday for a daily driver. The Blanks are the way to go. Others are too expensive to have to keep eating through pads.

one of the threads mentioned a lifetime warranty on autozone rotors, but those manuf. listed above on the autozone site only had a 3 month warranty.
I don't know about all that.
I got my blanks at a place called Auto Parts Plus here where I live. It is just one of those local auto stores that gives Autozone and NAPA a run for their money. If they were a brand, I don't even remember, I didn't much care. I put those on a year ago and they are still doing great now.

i have brembo cross/drilled rotors on both front and rear. if i ever have to do it again i would go for slotted rotors instead.
although the rotors have been running great for the last 3 months or so... but i have a bad feeling my rotors gonna crack soon or later...

Go with the cross-drilled, I put them on my front, and will do the same in the back. Awesome stopping, no fading and you will definetely notice it...just make sure you break it in for a few hundred miles. There are no noises or anything unusual, the brakes just feel great and it seems like the more you go in the braking process, the better it fells. If you get slotted, you will wear out your pads quicker and there is more probability for noise.
This is where I ordered mine, speedy1280 is very nice, and he had the rotors down here in 5 days. They are excellent and as promised.

the biggest factor is how you drive...IMO the next is the pads that you use...
Personally (at the track) I have gone through pads quicker with my slotted and cross drilled rotors but have had no rotor issues (yet!? probably 400 track miles). But- I go kinda easy on the brakes and do a bunch of my braking with the steering wheel
For daily driving I dont really see it as an issue but since you said you are going to the track... for longevity blanks are best, but they might not perform the absolute best. Slotted are probably best of both worlds. Remember to get good pads too.

Just one quick question. You said your pads have plenty of life left in them. How did you come to the conclusion that your rotors were shot? Is it just because you're getting squeaking and the pads look fine so you're assuming it's the rotors.
I just wanted to make sure you knew squeaking/squealling is a common issue with Maxima's brakes even if everything is brand new. Not everyone, but a lot have noise issues with brakes. Mine did it when my parents used to own it. I haven't had any problems with it. The last time they had the brakes done before I got it from them, they took it back to the dealership 3 times because of the noise.
Just wanted to make sure you're not doing something you don't need to.

ok...can we conclude this? im more confused about rotors now than ever...
slotted and dimpled? or just sloted? i dont go to the track, i do plan on it but not much, but i do like to use my stopping power, and i do have a tendancy to bake the maxima brakes... i dont wana cut the life of my pads dramatically but i dont mind if the life is cut down a LITTLE BIT....should i just get slotted and dimpled or just slotted? or just stick with blanks and get better pads?

i think that slotted/drilled are for looks...if you were to go with blanks, these would be good for daily driving. Those blanks will eliminate all stereotypes about breaking. This would be good for the all-a-round rotor.
Question: Does anybody have a pic of dimpled/slotted?
