i just did BrianV's intake mod and took about 1/2 an hour. the think looks a little ghetto with the duct tape but sounds NICE! it's a whole lot louder than i expected. at WOT it stays silent til about 2500 rpms then starts screaming to redline. the whole setup feels pretty secure. i plan on buying a huge washer to put between the MAF and gold bracket. with the washer, i dont think i will need to use the duct tap any more. anyways.. do the intake mod if urs isnt modded yet!

Glad to see I can help everyone out. It means a lot that people value my opinions.

Out of curiousity. Do you agree that the duct tape is somewhat necessary now that you've done it. The gold piece often gets kinda bent up, etc. PLEASE let me know how the washer works out. Tell me size, etc. I'll then give it a try on my friend's ride.

The how2's can be found at http://www.brianv.net/car.html

They're listed at the top, it's the intake mod.

duct tape...

the duct tape is a MUST! without it, you can see between the MAF and the gold bracket piece. another idea you could try, already too late for me, is just to cut the stock air box aroud the gold piece. the plastic isnt superhard. this way you dont need duct tape or wahers or anything else. im going to do the washer setup tomorrow, suppose to rain soon down here.

Yes, please let me know how that works out. I plan on putting my filter in right after I get online. I do have a questions. What type of filters and air intake systems are you all using?

You guys feel any difference? I would guess going this route
would be better overall than spending $150 on an intake, right?

Super blue

alright guys, no more duct tape. i went to my local Sears and they didnt have a 3 inch washer so i bought somthing called "Super Blue." it's made specifically for gasket seals. it's "guarenteed" not to leak. it takes an hour to dry so i cant do it today, suppose to rain here too.

In regards to performance.. i cant really feel a difference but i do have a longer chirp going into second gear and i happen to spin a little bit more when i take off while racing. some signs of performance..? maybe..

BrainV's intake mod==> http://www.brianv.net/filter.html

this intake mod is a must do if your still running stock.

Okay I installed the ractive heat shield filter. I like the way it sounds. I guess because of the shield around the cone, the engine doesn't sound loud at all. I did have to take it on I-285 just to test it out. I was impressed. It has a small V-8 growl to it. I'm going to really take it for a drive in a little.

This is the first of many mods. I'm hooked for life.

I used my intake mod first, then I coughed up the cash and got the CAI. The CAI sounds better but there is no real performance gain. The CAI has a little better low end, but the homemade has better high end because it doesn't have all the piping that the CAI has.

Definately worth it. Sure the CAI looks better, but this is just as effective.

Super Blue Works....

so far at least. my engine now looks clean without the duct tape. the super blue seems to work great but i dont have any long term experience with it yet.. just did it today. the super blue filled the cracks perfectly.

Okay, I have had the new filter out on the town. I'm really impressed. My brother was even commenting on the difference. I still can't get over the sound. For 19.75, I'm very happy with this upgrade. Have a nice evening.

Well you don't have to reset the ECU, I don't find it necessary but some people say you should. Hey it won't hurt anything right?

The filter will last forver, just wash it every 10,000 miles or so. You can make it more than 10 if u want. Just buy the K&N cleaner kit for like $10.

Sound is a great improvement huh?

I was wondering what was the point of resetting the ECU? I did disconnect my battery before doing it. Once again I am impressed at how a $20 air filter from ebay can provide me with so much entertainment.

Disconnecting the battery does not reset the ecu on a maxima.

I just installed an Intake and i have the check engine light on. I tried to reset the ECU this morning but it didnt seem to work. Does the car need to be on? Or just the accessory?

Just Accessory.

Turn accessory on.
Turn ECU control screw all the way Clockwise, hold for 2+ seconds, turn back all the way CCwise. Repeat immediately.
Then turn key off, and then start engine.
That worked for me.

If you still have check engine, then something must be tripping it off.

Ahh oops I forgot to mention to pur it in accessory mode.

I used my instructions to clear out my taillights.

You can buy the filter at: http://response.simplenet.com

$19.99 3" Universal Cone Filter

I simply stated that disconnecting the battery does not reset the ECU. There is still a point to do it, but disconnecting the battery does nothing other than make you have change your radio presets back to your configuration.

I will say that when I did disconnect the battery, and reconnect it, I didn't have a check engine light come on.
