Exhaust piping size Q

i plan on doing a full custom exhaust and im wondering what a good size is for the piping? i plan on keepin it N/A. should i go 2 1/4, 2 1/2, 3? i just want it to perform at its best, not really caring for sound. will 2 1/2 be alright? will i still get all the back pressure i need?
