Has anyone had this problem with gas?

When I'm putting gas in my Max, I put the pump in lock it and let it go until it clicks meaning it's full. When I get back into the car the gas needle is showing a little more than 3/4 full. I thought maybe the lock on the pump slipped and I thought it was full, wrong it happen twice after that, and this last time I kept pumping and it kept clicking like it was full and when I checked the needle same thing, in the middle of full and 3/4. Is there a problem with the needle or the gas tank? Anybody had or have this problem?

Thanks - TMaxx

Are you using the same pump all the time? Maybe it is forcing more gas than the 'click' can take and is prematurely stopping the flow.

sounds like a small problem with the sending unit in the tank. All this is is a variable resistor hooked up to a float in the tank. as the fluid level moves up and down this changes the resistance to the fuel gauge and therefore moves the needle.

Is there something I can do, or should this be handled by a mechanic?

that depends on how mechanically inclined you are. if somthing is wrong you do have to take out the fuel pump.

But there is a test you should be able to do without taking out the fuel pump. You first have to remove the back seat(bottom part). Then you have to unscrew the metal cover thats under the seat. After you did this you should see an electrical conection. remove the conector carefully and locate terminals E and G. put an ohm meter on these two, and with a full tank of gas the resistance should be 4 - 8 ohms (78 - 85 empty) if it reads higher resistance then you would need to remove the fule pump assembly and replace the variable resistor in the tank.

Always happens to me. Then I drive for 2 minutes and it goes past full, it's like that with every car I've ever driven. If yours doesn't go all the way up then the tank floater must be broken or something.

Mine doesn't do that.
When the pump "clicks" off for me, I cannot put a drop more in or it will overflow.....trust me. Unfortunately, I have had to learn that the hard way.
I don't know what to tell you though.
I just figured that every Maxima was full when it clicked off the first time.

Anyway, I would recommend for you to keep track of all the miles that you get on your tank, even if the needle does not show it all the way full. If you are getting like 350-400 miles per tank, just get used to it. You are getting all the gas that you can and you needle might just be messed up. If you are getting a lot fewer miles than that, something might be wrong.

The other thing to try at the gas station is to manually pump the gas, don't use the latch to hold it in place. When you know your getting close to where you normally would click off, ease off the handle and put the gas in slow. If you normally let it pump fast the gas could be backing up and splashing back, engaging the auto shutoff on the pump. Once the gas is up in there, you have to wait a minute for the nozzle to drain to continue pumping.

or try running your tank down pretty low, and see how many gallons before it clicks, our tanks hold around 18 gallons right?
