My 99 Maxima suddenly could not start

My 99 Maxima running fine then suddenly could not restart after parked at my friend place. The engine rotates, but it does not run. I checked all fuses, they are all fine. I got new battery recently. I manual read the light flash code, it says "1401 and 1402". Does anyone know what are these codes? I could not find them on Haynes book as well as on the internet. Thanks in advance

That’s the damm immobilizer, it is acting up. That Happened to me and I had to tow the car to the damm stealer ship. They reprogrammed my keys. I don't know why that happened and the stealer ship had no logical answer for me.

Must be something in the air...On Thursday while at work, I went out for lunch - no problem. When I tried to start it 2 hours later, it ran for 2 seconds, then shut off. This scared me to all hell because this has never happened (119K on it). I tried again, and it ran for 2 seconds. I pumped the gas 1 time, and it revved up, but the 2nd time there was nothing, and it died. I tried to start again and it wouldn't catch. I did notice that the "security" light stayed on while I was trying to start it. I'd never seen this before.

I had it towed to my mechanic, and he told me to bring the 2nd key because maybe the chip in the first key was faulty or something. The 2nd key wouldn't start it either. Everything pretty much checked out, so he said it may have to be taken to the dealer to reset the security system, or it could be one of the computer modules.

The max is doing exactly what you all have described above. I didn't check the codes or anything - I think I'll have that done first thing Monday morning. Is it likely that there's anything else, or will I be "broken off" for $700.00?

So I have the car towed to the dealer this afternooon - the guy who did my paperwork jumps in my car, asks me a couple basic questions, and tries to start it. It didn't start, so he said, "Oooohhh...sounds like the timing belt is broken." Now mind you all, I'm not a mechanic (by any stretch), but this is what I came back with..."You know, it could be the timing belt, but there's just 1 thing...this car has a timing chain, not a belt. Are there any other suggestions you might have??" So he said the mechanic will take a look and figure it out.

I'll keep ya posted...I'm hoping for the best, but braced for the worst....

Hahhah timing belt..

Im sorry bout that.. If its your ECU, try to get one somewhere else besides the dealer.. Dealer will charge you like 700-800.

Good luck.

So I get a call this morning saying that the security codes were reset, and the keys were re-programmed. The damage was $110. I guess the ECU wasn't involved (thank God). I thought there was a way that we could reset the security system ourselves. If so, I wasted $110, but I was happy it wasn't $695 or more. I was a bit disturbed that when I asked the mechanic what caused this, he couldn't give me a logical answer. He was honest, though, saying, "it's just one of those things..."

I'm REALLY happy it wasn't the "timing belt" .....

Besides the coil packs, the immoblizer is another common problem with the 99's. Average cost to reset and reprogram keys seems to be around 110-125.

I think nissan put out a TSB on this problem. If a dealer states you need a new ecu, I'd suggest taking the car to another dealer.

I finally had to tow it to a dealer. The key program was messed up. Dealer had to reprogrammed it. However this same problem had happened again after 2 years. One of my keys shown a little crack on it, so I guess it may had caused the problem. I bought a new key and had dealer program it. I have been driving for the last 4 years without repeating this problem.

Are you saying you waited four years to have the car fixed, then waited nearly another four years to update us?

This happened to me recently :/ ~$800 to fix

Mechanic said that if the battery drops below 9 volts, then the security system thinks that someone is trying to steal it and the immobilizer kicks in.

Also, he said not to disconnect the battery or it could happen again, so i am kind of iffy about installing anything that hardwires.

Just my 2 cents
