intakes
ive seen on the forum that u can jsut get a cone filter and replace the stock box filter for like 20 bucks or whatever
does this give the same performance results as buying the stillen intake or the CAI?
thanx in advance

NO. You suck in hot air from under the hood. Hot air has less density and will produce less power than the stock intake. The look OK on a dyno because the hood of the car is open. It may feel better at high RPM's, but that's only because it hurts the bottom end. They're a waste of money.
i disagree...
i hardly doubt its a waste of money. i just did this mod saturday and i am completely satisfied. this mod, compared to a $200+ mod is great in my opinion. the throttle response it great and i can feel a difference on the highway. this mod may not be as good as a CAI, but for 1/10 the price. this is one hell of a mod.
Re: whats the difference between the two then
You wont see any difference after changing just an intake. The CAI takes in air from under the car which is cooler. The cone filter just sucks in air.
Some ppl say CAI is better and others say Cone. The 5-6 hps you gain wont do much except eat up more gas.
Get a y-pipe and exhaust to feel a real difference!

I like the stock setup
I have had all kinds of intake setups (PR CAI, Stillen, Cone, etc.) So far, my favorite is the the stock airbox. My car just seems to perform best with the stock setup. I am going to try the poor man's CAI soon. Since my car behaves favorably with the stock intake, I am hoping for a positive outcome. Dave B seems to really like it, hopefully I will too. I'd say save your money and time. Cone filters look and sound nice, but I don't think they do much for performance.

It seems to me that the temp of the air outside the engine would not be drastically different from that of the air inside the engine. If the car is moving and the engine is sucking some air, it seems to me that the air inside the engine by would only be a slight bit hotter than outside air. Let's face it, if the engine compartment was very hot, it would make everything in there hot. Open the hood after a long drive and only the radiator, radiator hoses, and exhaust manifold are very hot. Everything else is just a little warm. I could be wrong. Has engine compartment temp around the intake area ever been mearsued?
Yes, people have measured the underhood temperature. It's high. First, the air passes through the radiator and is then heated by the exhaust pipes and engine block. On a hot day it can easily go 90 degrees above ambient, and that's a loss of several HP.
I don't believe BS Butt Dynos.

The stock air intake does draw air in from the outside, and this is good. It's the "POP" style intakes that draw air from under the hot engine compartment under the hood that are bad.

I thought the air came through the air inlet right above radiator. Wouldn't that air still be cool? And since you don't take the air inlet out, wouldn't it still be receiving cold air from outside? I did BrianV mod on the intake with a ractive heat shield filter. I am more than impressed with the effect it has had on my car.

some of you little grasshoppers have a lot to learn
There is ALWAYS a sacriface, you gain something but lose something in return. The question you have to ask yourself is it worth the sound?
As a suggestion, anyone tried a shield around the intake(between it and the engine)?
