How to: check ambient air temp with auto climate control...
Forgive my if you already know this. I'm forbidden to search.
I come from G20.net, someone just found how you check outside air temp, inside air temp, and intake air temp using your auto climate control. Turns out it works on Maximas too. I thought I'd tell you guys in case you didn't know.
1. Turn key to ON
2. Within 5 seconds, hold down OFF button on HVAC for 5 seconds
3. All elements in display will light up
4. Press ^ (HOT) key 4 times - I got code 51 here
5. Press DEFROST key
BEHOLD! Ambient air temperature! Oh yeah, I got 111*F!
You can then press DEFROST again to get inside air temp and a third time to get intake air temp. Pretty slick!
It doesn't work while driving, but it's better than nothing.
To get out of the diagnostic mode, press the AUTO key.

I still have the G, she's healthy as ever! The Max is my husband's car. Have not seen you at Gnet for a while - sad news, Dom's stealth G died yesterday. Hope you are enjoying your Max.
Funny story, this morning (before he knew abt. the climate control trick) his friend was getting a ride and asked if the car could tell the outside air temp. My husband said something to the effect of "what do you think this is, a &%*ing Mercedes?" So he gets home and I told him he had to try this...so tomorrow he has something to show his friend after all.

I like my max better than a mercedes

I think the 99's have that built in into the climate control unit. Thanks for the info, I will try it tomorrow. BTW, I know something is definitely wrong with my unit....do you know what the codes mean or where can you find out? Thanks.

I dont know why Nissan never had that to begin with in all of the climate control units starting in 1995. This feature comes in handy when you come in the car but it sucks that you cant check it while driving. Its cool nonetheless.

the 98 auto cc has everything to check the temp, but they never but the AMB button in. I cant understand why, but there are ppl who modified the CC and added the AMB. Nice find though.
*EDIT* It works while driving if you follow the directions then start the car. Of couse the regular CC functions dont work. But at the track this would be sweet.

I dont get the intake sensor temperature either. Code 51 just like you.

I can get the ambient temperature and the inside temp. I just can't get the IAT sensor temp cause the we don't have the wiring or something. From what I read the AMB button doesn't solve this at all.

I wonder if the maxima has a trick like that to display battery voltage. That would be sweet if it did especially for the stereo guy's. Another thing I wonder if we can do is get a digital RPM readout instead of just the needle on the tach. On my VW I can hold down the trip reset button, turn the ignition to on position 2 times & on the third time start the car. Then my digital display in the dash under the gauges where the vehicle milage is displayed shows the exact rpm. eg. 5308rpm's. That would be nice to have on the max!!!

Well I think I have a good idea for a possible new Sticky regarding intakes. I just went out to the max & made sure I had the intake air tempature function "Which I do" & then took the car for a spin. I was able to drive the vehicle & toggle through AMB & IAT. The othside temp. was 80 degrees & my intake air temp. was flopping between 89 & 90 degrees. I also tried to see if once I left the diagnostic mode (turned on the A/C) to see if I was able to get back in the mode while driving. I had no luck with that. Maybe when i have alittle more time to play around with it I can figure out how. So were basically haulted at this time with putting it in diagnostic mode only once while the vehicle is running. Now back to the sticky idea!!!
Maybe we should create a log of outside air tempatures & intake air tempatures with several different intake designs (CAI, HAI, Hybred, Stock etc.) the see which intake is allowing the coolest air to enter the engine. We will need to post outside temp, intake temp., intake style/design (injen, stillen, JWT, etc.) and MPH for it to produce good statistics for us orgers to determine which intake produces the coolest airflow. Granted, I'm sure humidity will play a factor, but we are just looking for a example. Obviously if we want specific's we need alittle bit more of a controlled enviroment. But I think we can get a good idea by having a log to double check.

I just went out and tried this on mine....it worked.
That is cool.
I have a 99 with the auto climate control and the AMB button, but now I can tell the inside temp and the intake temp.
Thanks for this....cool find.

Cool, I just did this and it DOES WORK with the car on. In fact a waited about 10 sec after the car was on and it still worked, although when it gets to 41, the compressor turns on and when it gets to 51 it turns back off.

i have a 95 max and was just curious but when i cycle through the codes when i get to 5 so the one where you can check the outside inside temp if i press the fan button it comes up with 0c if i then press up it goes up to 3c by increments of 1 with no a/c indicator if i press down it dose the same just with the a/c indicator i could be wrong but i found testing with a thermometer that when set and saved on 0c the air is 5c colder and the low pressure pipe under the front is allot colder but on 3c ether way its warmer for normal operation than on 0c and the low pressure pipe on 3c not as cold also the auto climate seems to me more active when saved at 3c no a/c indicator what lead me to this was poor performance in my opinion and when car was stationary when i first checked mine read 3c a/c indicator on now i have it on 0c and performance has improved greatly so yeah just thought i would share if not already known btw i have a RHD version of climate control
