I've had mine get stuck in park before too Got it out by squeezing the top and pulling down real hard. Was a little worried I might break something, but it still works fine, and has managed to get stuck since then as well.

1. Do you use your parking brake?
2. Does the push button on the shift lever press in at all?

Maybe your brake switch is busted..??? (the switch that allows the solenoid to operate in the shift housing when the brake pedal is pressed - you should hear a click if you listen carefully when you press the brakes)...

sounds like the brake/shift interlock mechanism has gone bad

the brake solinoid is clicking away. rather loudly i might add. there is a little piece of metal in my valvebody which stopped my car from shifting befoce. some beam with a piston on the end that is cut out..best i can describe i'm a littel trashed. i really don't want to drop my tranny pan and look at it tonight. i have my haynes maual here i'm going to read over. input most wanted!

edit: it is hard to push down on the button that allows the shifter staff to move, even compresing it all the way does not help =[ .

Try pulling up on your emergency brake and then try shifting..

This sounds bad.

i know what the problem is.
you should take out the whole gear cover and everything around the gear stick completely with a flat screwdriver and look down to the right of the gear stick.
you'll see a white solenoid. if you look well, you'll see that it is broken or weak, and can no longer move out of the way of the gear when you hit the brake.
thats the shift lock. it is for security. so as not to be able to move the car without the keys.
solution:
what you do is break it off, and render it useless.
problem:
you'll be able to move your car without hitting the brakes when shifting outta park.
let me know if you have any problems.
i'll try to guide you thru it.

to what luga just said... I think even though you are hearing the solenoid click - it is not completely disengaging... just remove the trim piece around the shifter and you should be able to see what the problem is...

i pulled it apart. the plastic looks like it sheared off or something but i can't find the piece. regardless i'm just going to yank out the pin. is the pin the metal bolt looking thing with a spring at the end? should i rip apart all the plastic or is some of it for when i press down on the auto's shift **** button? or will this process render it inoperable. thanks again. maybe i'll take some pics and show you guys...

What is the Real Purpose of that Annoying Shift Lock

The shift locks main purpose is safety. This forces the driver to depress the brake before moving the car into a driving position. The brake switch completes the circuit to power on the solenoid that then unlocks the shift lever. I suspect incidents of people inadvertently shifting into drive or reverse hitting something such as the house or worse yet someone prompted automakers to add this feature to the car.

I would think that the brake switch is busted. check behind the brake pedal and make sure it isn't diconecte or broken.

Do you know if he spilled a soda around the area of the shifter .... This can and has cause my brothers maxima to not shift out of park... If that's the case all you need to do is clean out under the shifter and all around it .. When his did it you couldn't even push the button to change gears after it was cleaned there was no problem

should've just cleaned it bc i prob have spilt **** but i ended up sawing the plastic release and looks like i need a new solenoid bc it wasn't pushing the lever to unlock it correctly. now i dont have to push brake in to shift which is cool i guess....

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue on my '99 GXE. I did spill about half an Arizona green tea all over the shift stick the other day and just today it wouldn't shift out of park. I pulled the plastic trim piece off and looked all around down there but wasn't able to see the solenoid. I was able to get it out of park by pushing in the shift button and slamming it into gear. Not sure if this is bad or what, but it was only way I could get it to get out of park. I will pull the console apart tomorrow and clean it all out. Hopefully this fixes the issue as c1int0 said it did on his brother's car.
