Rack and pinion? Should I replace it?

Hello everyone.. I got a question for all you Master Mechs out there. I'v had both my steering boots torn for who knows how long, but when I drive below 60 no problems and when I drive faster than that I get alot of front end shake....
I know its not the allignment or balance just had them done. Is it the ball joints, or maybe a tie rod. If it is the rack and pinion how much is it going to cost and can I do it myself

Mine have been ripped for a long time too, though my car doesnt shake. Maybe check if there is play in any of the front wheels, which maybe wheel bearings or ball joints. Steering racks are expensive, even used/rebuilt (300-600), not including install.

ok I just checked and there is no play but I am losing just a little fluid out of the boots though but I am not really showing any loss in the reserve...

for the shaking, have the tires rechecked for proper balancing or a bad tire. for the p/s leak, the seal in the rack are the culprit, the boots are only dust shields for the rack. sounds like the damage is done. Lucas p/s treatment may help if the leak isn't too bad. but in reality it's rack time. i don't recommend doing this one yourself if you've never done a rack b4. nissans are a bear!!

talk to a friend or relative about their mechanics and service shops they trust and have had good service. nothing like word of mouth ads. call a few local shops , get a feel for what's fair in your area. get good info first then make a decision. you don't have to "kill the car". good hunting!!

I'd def check ur tires first...make sure they're not out of balance.

Racks are important...and if you're getting alot of wobble from it...I'd worry...but I'd doubt u have a completely failed rack (loose play, etc.). I'd suspect some wobbly tie rod ends first, etc.

Some leakage is normal for older racks. They seem to leak all the time in older max's.

Though if your leak is minimal like mine, then just wait before u have to replace more than 12 oz'z of fluid per year.

If ur on a budget...get a FSM, and rebuild the rack yerself. Tho, its a PITA...and I've never done it...tho I'm considering it. 2 cents.
