I recently bought a K&N panel filter and topped up my gas tank when a little less than half full. I got better than usual mileage in city driving and that includes playing with my new Y-pipe for about 50 miles. I am now trying, emphasis on trying, to drive it more sensibly and will have a better handle on this tank which I intend to run down to the idiot light in order to get a better read on MPG. Also check your tire inflation, a lot of people run around on under-inflated tires.

Actually i am modded i have intake and full exhaust cat to muffler. I do mostly city driving but and on highway for like 5-10 to get to and from school but thats only on M and W. I used to get like 500-550 on a highway trip i could go forever. Im driving to Ny in 2 weeks so will see if its just the city driving.

Also check your ECU for codes related to the oxygen sensor. A bad o2 sensor can screw up your mileage significantly. Other than that .... I don't know. Make sure there's no leaks in the system and your injectors are working properly. And maybe even check compression. When my turbo Talon's 4G63 was losing compression, my mileage dropped off something nasty.
Surely you jest. The AC system in my 96 max is the COLDEST ac I've ever felt in a vehicle. Its waaay colder than the AC in my 2003 MAX and much colder than the ac in any other vehicle I've owned. OF course, I have dark tint all around which helps, but still, unless the outside temp is in the 90's, I have to keep my AC on either 1 or 2 on a 4 position dial due to how cold it is.

i get about 600 kms about 360 miles a tank when the idiot light goes on. then with another 2 gallons left in the tank, i could probably make it to 400 no problem. i do the 0-60 everytime. so i usually let it coast when i hit the speed limit. watch out for me on LSD

Where can i buy a fuel filter? Ive replaced my knock sensor, cleaned the TB, ran seafoam through the crankcase, and changed oil regurally. This tank im running on now has been worse then ever. Its about 140 and a little below half. I been usually getting 17-18 mpg. I do alot of short trips. Ive been trying to keep my foot off the pedel but those max's attract alot of attention. How hard it is to change the fuel filter? I also need to replace my PCV valve. Where can i find one of these suckers? I find that the AC isnt COLD either. Its cool but not cold. Well thanks guys

You can get the fuel filter at Autozone or Pepboys. The can get the oem filter 16400-0M200 which is better quality from the dealership. Its easy to do but can get a little fustrating getting the hoses off. First you have to take out the fuel pump fuse from under the steering column, start the car until it shuts off. Crank it a few time to get rid of the pressure. Put a pan under the car so it can catch the gas that comes out when removing the hoses.

if u dont feel like pulling the fuse out, you can just open your gas tank cap to releave the pressure.

A bad rear o2 sensor does not change your mileage.

You bastard. I got a new O2 on the way and I'm planning a EGR project for a weekend sometime. Those are THE ONLY things left that affect my gas mileage that I haven't fixed or replaced. Well, that and gtting a new engine. To think about it, if I got a new engine the day I got the car, the money I'd have saved on gas would cancel the engine out all together.

I know the feeling man! I was getting about 220-240 for a while, and I replaced my knock sensor which put me up to about 250-260. But then I replaced my fuel filter and put in Mobil 1 oil and now I get well over 300. All city! As far as I'm conserned Mobil 1 is the bomb. Try it out. and I've got 86k miles on the car

To you guys who get above 250, what is your driving style? At what rpms do you shift? I usually shift between 2500 and 3000 rpms.

I get about 200-220 to a tank, and its 99% city driving. Always use premium, and never fill up at shell. I do drive pretty hard, I redline it at least once whenever I drive, but its not on every light. I drive the car normal/hard, but I dont abuse it and I take care of it.

All my sensors function fine (replaced coolant temp sensor, crankshaft pos sensor (x2), camshaft position sensor, air filter, oil filter, belts, performed 60k maintenance). I don't get any cel codes. My compression is 195 across all cylinders (55k on engine, 5spd tranny (converted) around 100k, rebuilt myself).

I've given up trying to get good milage. I don't know what else to check. Any suggestions??????

I have posted my highway miles above. I truly feel sorry for the people with crappy mileage. I usually run 89 octane and have the original plugs still. I don't use my car for commuting downtown anymore. However, on a trip that was 11 miles each way, without going over say 40 mph, and lights along the way, I could get about 325 miles before the idiot light went on and would sometimes let it go a little below that. That translated into 18.5 mpg. Now with my recently installed K&N panel air filter, Budget Y-pipe and premium (92 octane) I think I could get closer to 20 mpg if I stopped driving it like I stole it. I recently had a 570 miles round trip, prior to installing the Y-pipe, with 3 people and luggage and a lot of climbing involved. Much of the time I was at either 70 or 75 with cruise control on and I got 28 mpg, on 89 octane.

The car is a 5-speed, but has only 53,000 miles on it.

I question how much air some people are running in their tires and how clean their air filters are.

i did everything to improve my mileage...or so i thought, cleaned TB, changed bad KS, changed O2 sensors, still was at like 20 mpg, i got around to the fuel filter, jacked upto 23 mpg, i dont think the previous owner ever changed it, so the clogged filter mustve been the bottleneck

Oh, but I don't jest. I just find the a/c in Toyota, Honda, and even Chrysler (for God's sake) vehicles to be sufficiently cold. Even my buddy with an SE-R SpecV agrees it should be a bit colder. The digital a/c in late model Nissans only goes down to 65 degrees. That sounds cold until you jump in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and see that its a/c goes down to 59 degrees! I have no tint on my glass, and I will tell you it definitely DOES make a difference (my Talon TSi had limo tint all the way around and the interior definitely cooled down faster than it does on the Max. I'm a valet, so maybe I'm just spoiled by a/c systems that get colder faster than Nissan's system does. Other cars I can turn the a/c on 1 or 2 right from the start because of how cold it is; in my Max I need to crank it up to 3 or 4 to cool down, and after a while I can turn it down a bit. So maybe my complaint has more to do with the quickness with which the system cools down the interior and it's ability to maintain that coolness without constantly flipping switches. However, today I spent about 15 minutes in a 2004 3.5 SE and found it's a/c system to operate much better than mine does. Blah.

That's insane, how can you get 400 in the city that's like 25/26 mpg unless you drive till it's reeeeaaaallly empty. Nissan would have certainly advertised this.

Well just drive under 2800RPMs and no AC. My town is very tiny so I guess I can't really compare since there is not much stop and go traffic at all. So my city driving would prob be a mixture of everyones 60/40(city/hwy). Yes, I do ge close to empty. Although, currently I have been going WOT alot and it is at 280 and it is about 1mm about the 1/4 left line. If I drive moderate, I should be getting close to 400 again.

Right now im getting about 260 per gallon (all city). When I first got my max about a month ago I was driving like I stole it till that stupid light kept coming on every other day. Now I'm driving miss daisy and so many people are tailgating me. Can't I drive the speed limit in peace? Do we all have to speed to the next stoplight?

As far as the A/C is concerned this is the coldest I have ever felt (I had to turn the fan down to 1 and turn temp down) of course the warranty that I got covers my A/C so I'll be cool for the rest of the summer. It just takes a reaaallllly long time for it to get cold. My previous car '90 626 the A/C blew cold immediatley despite how old the car was. Of course I'm only comparing to '94 honda accord, '88 sterling 827S, '02 hyundai sonota, '93 chevy cavilier '98 ford explorer (coldest out of this group).
