RPM problem - Need help

Hey guys. I was driving to the city yesterday and as always I got stuck in traffic, bumper to bumper for about 30 min (85 degree weather). All of the sudden with the car in drive (auto) the RPM slowly increased to about 800 - 850 from 600, I was stopped at this time with my foot on the brake. The noise increased and the car didn't sound good at all, drivability was the same even when the traffic eased, didn't notice any loss of power. No overheating. After I drove at 60 mph for a few minutes and got to my destination, the car was acting fine. Same thing happened the next day for a few minutes and the problem went away again, this time was just driving around town, no hwy speeds.

Anybody has any idea what this could be, it's driving me nuts. Thanks
