The first thing to do is verify that the engine oil is up to the FULL mark,
that the oil is of the correct viscosity, and that it has not become diluted
with gasoline. If these criteria are met, proceed with the test procedure
(below).
The dashboard oil pressure gauge is either accurate or inaccurate. The way
to find out which is to install a "known good" oil pressure gauge, start the
engine, let it come to normal operating temperature, and take the pressure
reading. This test gauge is installed in the engine compartment, not in
the dashboard. This is not a complicated test and should take only an
hour, start to finish.
If the test gauge confirms low pressure at a warm idle you have a
mechanical problem which must be repaired soon. This could be a worn oil
pump, worn engine bearings, or a defective oil pressure relief valve.
If the test gauge shows normal pressure at a warm idle you have a defective
dashboard gauge or oil pressure sensor.
