Replace ECU?? Error code 31, 95 SE

Help!
The check engine light came on. I went to vbxmaxima.8m.com and was able to get the error code: 31 on the MIL.
Code reads:Replace ECM (ECCS control module). (Chilton)
Do I need to replace the ECM? Is there a difference between the ECM and the ECCS?
Is there some other diagnostic test necessary? Do I also need an ODB2 scan?
Finally, should I replace the ECM with a rebuilt or go to a salvage yard?
Please forgive my lack of knowledge. Just a girl with a Maxima....
Thanks for your help.

Find one same year and tranny.

But first reset the ECU and see if the code comes back.

I tried without success to reset the ECU. The check engine light will not go away.
Any ideas?

First of all, code #31 is only applies to 93-94 model year (OBD-I). 95-99 you have to trace the codes via OBD-II, and if I remember correctly, then there's only one code that contained #31 is P0131 = Front O2 sensor (Right bank). Second, ECM = Electronic Control Module. I don't know what's ECCS stand for, however, I know exactly there's a contact relay called ECCS that control both camshaft position sensor and some other power train control solenoids. You may take a quick look at the ECCS fuse. It's located in the fuse box under the hood, on driver side fender, and it's very close to the battery. Anyway, I may give ECCS a name; ECCS= Electronic Contact Control System.

NO, 31 = 0301
You don't get PXXXX thorugh the screw method, only by useing an OBDII scanner.
She read the ECU correctly.

Sadly, I believe you will have to replace the ECU. Start looking on www.car-part.com and in the forsale section of this forum.

Like I said above, find an ECU same year and tranny.(But for you a 96ECU will work)

Or if you want to make your car faster you can buy an aftermarket ECU from JWT or Technoquare.

Thanks again for your help.
I have managed to reset the check engine light.
I am on my way now to check car-part.com for a replacement.
