4th gen Maxima cloth seats SUCK. Why the hell are they so uncomfortable?

Maybe it's just me, but I find my cloth 4th seats to be really really uncomfortable. I don't know if it's the same for leather, but for me they provide very little back support. I tried adjusting EVERYTHING (lumber, positioning, angle). I got NADA.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make them more comfortable? How about some plush seat covers?

BTW... I don't have several hundred dollars to spend on new seats from another car. If I had the money, I probly would do that though.

I guess you never drove a max with leather seats while it's 150*+ inside the car. Seats are the same just the covers are different.

No, nothing you can really do. I think DaveB messed with something around the thigh area, bending something to make it hug your thighs more. However, if you think the cloth is uncomfortable and unsupportive, try the leather seats in the 4th gen. Horrible, plain and simple. You do nothing but slide...slide...slide around. Very glad i got cloth in mine. Suede (sp?) inserts would be best...

i like my cloth seats... but i'm 6'3"

so I'm kinda forced to sit in the 'gangsta' position at all times just to fit, so the way i slouch doesnt really matter about back support i suppose

They spent the rest of the money on perfecting the vq.........
If its one thing I hate about nissan, love the performance and reliability. I just have yet to find one with comfy, plush interior. Infiniti's are somewhat better.......just needs to be worked on.

this thread is

i have a 94 altima and you cant even fit behind the wheel. the seat is soooooo small. the seating area is so short, even your butt wont completly fit in there. it feels like a cage. then when i step in the max. its roomy as hell. i think the maxima is very very roomy. but then again im 5"9 and 160 lbs. what about u?

wow. this makes me feel great about the decision i made when i purchased my car. I narrowed it down to a fully loaded SE with leather and a SEL with cloth. obviously i chose the fully loaded SE with leather.

I love my leather seats. they are very comfortable. Sorry your having trouble with cloth.

For all those with problems with heat and leather...you may want to purchase a windshield visor and put it up everytime u park your car. I keep my windows rolled all the way up and i dont have a problem.

I love the cloth, i think it's just the seats that you're talking about. The SE cloth is very soft and comfortable to me

Cloth would be much better for the slide and hotness factor. I mean, I have black leather, and they burn you every time you get into the car.

Try sitting on a phone book to help the seat be more comfortable. Then, you could probably see over the steering wheel. *say sarcastically*

My 96 SE came with cloth and a few years ago I did the Leatherseats.com swap. I've been much happier sense. The leather used in the kit is far better the OEM leather. I don't slide around because the leather grain is grippy and not smooth like OEM. I also find the seat more supportive probably because the newer foam padding. Like someone had stated, I bent the lower cushion edges inward to give me a little more outer thigh support. The seats in the 4th gen are decent, but they're defintely not sporty. I'm 6' 2" 190lbs and find that I need more lower thigh support, but I find this true on nearly every car I drive. My biggest gripe about the Maxima seating is it's very clear Nissan designed this car for Asians and people 5' 8" and below. The seating position is all wrong for someone like me. Once the seat is adjusted correctly for my legs, my reach to the steering wheel and shifter is too far therefore it forces me to sit closer than I'd prefer.

I like my seats, Only problem is, im 5'8 and i cant reach the stereo when i have the seat in a comfortable position. (Guess thats what remotes are for)

They are very adjustable, i think that just messes with you;r mind. I tried adjusting mine a lot once, and couldnt find a comfortable position, so i just left it and came back the next day, and thought the seat was just about perfect.

Just dont pay much attention to it, heh

Had leather seats in my 95 SE, swapped it out for cloth (of a GXE - driver is powered). Biggest plus is that I don't have to have 2nd degree burns when sitting down in the car anymore (exaggerated but you do end up burning yer hyde). Second, the interior doesn't get nearly as hot after the car has been parked under the sun. Third, the A/C takes less time to cool off the interior now. Forth, no more sliding back and forth on the seat.

My only complaint, the cloth seats tend to stick to what I'm wearing as I try to settle myself on it. And then you get a nice shock as you try to get out of your car the moment you touch any metal surface. But, I still like cloth seats over leather. As for support, somehow these cloth seats provide more support especially in the lumber area. I like that a lot!

yeah, that was me that made mention of what you did. I personally would like to do tan leather seats with black suede inserts, that would probably provide the best grip and wouldnt burn the backside as much on a hot summer day, especially here in FLA...

:-) What can I say? I'm an Asian, 5'7". hehe! I have two option to choose: Maxima or Honda
The Max is much roomier.

Yes, I have to move forward from my seat to change music. During winter is a pain in the @ss and summer's a B@#$%. Almost fried my family jewel. Having leather is a bit better. Less dust and easier to maintain.

I'm 6"3" , I have tan SE cloth seats with power adjustment and I find them plenty comfortable espcially long journeys of which my family was just on. Even my wife commented on how comfortable the seats were, she's 5'6", I had black leather SE seats in my previous Max and all though it was cool to say I had "leather" in practical purposes they sucked, hot as hell in the summer (leg burn) and feezing in the winter. You could always get the fabric pulled and rebolstered?

Yup I'm 6' 3" and I ahve this problem all the time. Performance driving is tough because I can never get quite close enough to the wheel and still be able to double clutch and heel and toe effectively...get too cramped up.

Leather is never too hot or too cold when you have heated seats and the leather-seat-cooler mod: window tint. Quit your complainin'.

Dave B, is the design of the leatherseats.com seats very similar or significantly improved over stock? I find the stock seats pretty comfortable but more lumbar support and thigh support would be appreciated.

leatherseats.com is just the upholstery. You remove the original cloth and replace it with the kit they send you. You are still using the original seat except the cover. I'm 6'2" and I had my seat set up to be pretty much perpendicular to the floor, 90* for the math challenged. At first it was weird but after a while I got used to it and could drive for hours without my back feeling a thing. I don't sit like the wannabe gangsters cause that just looks so damn funny.

If anyone is interested.... I have a complete set of seats and door panels in dark grey cloth out of a 1997 SE. Drivers seat is power and they are in perfect condition. Contact me at jbjerke@charter.net if interested. I live in the northern Illinois area.

I for one believe that there is something that makes the SE seats more comfortable other than the fact that they are made of a different material. They just seem TOO MUCH better for it to be as simple as a change in fabric.
