shudder when decelerating

I sometimes get a shudder when I decelerate. I usually happens when I am driving about 40~45 mph. I take my foot off the gas and the car shudders as if the transmission was intermittently grabbing. I can speed up again with no problems, and it may or may not do it when I decelerate again. Got any ideas?

At first I thought your rotors were warped but you said you only took your foot off of the gas. Is your tranny 5 speed or auto? Are your tires in balance?

Automatic transmission. It doesn't happen ALL the time, probably a few times a month. It's not really predictable, sometimes it'll happen after I've been driving a while, sometimes when I've just started a trip.

I think its related to the torque lockup converter. I get a similar thing - its inbetween a shudder and a jerk... try this: Turn off overdrive and see if it happens then - I bet you it wont.

It only happens when in OD. Also, when coasting in OD, when I take my foot off the gas, it is like taking your foot off the gas suddenly in first or second in a manual -- it kind of lurches -- and then when you put your foot back on the gas. It's not smooth like it should be.

Mine does the same thing - I wouldn't describe the jerk I feel as being like taking your foot of the gas in 1st or 2nd - but more like 3rd gear. Mine is very intermittent - temperature dependent, incline or no incline dependent. I have notched it up to the way the tranny behaves... mines being doing it since it had 40k on it and now it has 106k... I haven't found a way to reproduce it.. sometimes it just feels worse .. but typically it is in the 40-50mph range...
