engine temp. gauge

ok guys, i was driving normaly, then i noticed that my temp. gauge was all the way up, and i mean past the second line on top.
pulled over, my engine was not smoking, just normal temperature.
had enough engine coolant and everything.
then i kept driving, wouldn't go down, i noticed though, every time i tapped on the gas, the needle would go down and up like fast, but it still stays up there. does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
thanx.

How did you know your coolant temp was fine? Just because there was no smoke coming out or anything doesnt mean it's not overheating.

You might just need to replace the relay (or hit it a little bit, hehe) if your fans aren't coming on. That could explain why the temp is up, but the coolant level is fine.

actually everything is fine, fan is working, coolant was added. the thing is, the needle was not just up to the 2nd line on top, but it surpassed the limit, its like pointing all the way up.
whenever i tapped on the gas, the needle would quickly go down and up like in half a second, its not just gradually going up.

im having the same problem, and i think its the temp sensor for the gauge. there are two sensors one for the ECU and another for the gauge. so the car will be running fine but the gauge will show that it running hot.

The same thing happened to my '99 about two years ago. I brought it to a shop and they replaced the sensor thing under the hood and it still did it. They kept the car for three days and it never over heated. To date no one I have asked has been able to figure it out. On a cold winter day the needle will shoot all the way up when the car is first started...after sitting in freezing or below freezing weather all night. My car has run and continues to run perfectly so I just ignore the temp guage. It will actually read the correct temp about 10% of the time when running.

I can't figure it out and I don't want someone digging around my girl and possibly messing something up. She has 142,000+ and runs like a champ
